Angus MacLennan
Angus MacLennan (May 3, 1844 – August 27, 1908) was a Canadian politician. Born in Dunvegan, Inverness County, on Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island, MacLennan was the Liberal Member of Parliament for the House of Commons of Canada riding of Inverness from 1896 to 1908. Angus MacLennan was the youngest of the ten children of John MacLennan, an early settler from Kintail Scotland. MacLennan taught at local district schools to earn money for his medical studies. He eventually graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1871, and practiced medicine for over 30 years in Inverness County, maintaining the practice throughout his political career. His extended family over the years now resides in Tyne Valley, Prince Edward Island and Mainland Nova Scotia. During his time as an MP, he was instrumental in bringing the railway to the west side of Cape Breton Island, thereby spurring the growth of Inverness as a coal-exporting boom town in the first quarter of the 20th century. ... Sir Henri Charles Wilfrid Laurier, ( ; ; November 20, 1841 – February 17, 1919) was a Canadian lawyer, statesman, and politician who served as the seventh prime minister of Canada from 1896 to 1911. The first French Canadian prime minister, his 15-year tenure remains the longest unbroken term of office among Canadian prime ministers and his nearly 45 years of service in the House of Commons is a record for the House. Laurier is best known for his compromises between English and French Canada. Hugh Cameron (politician)
Hugh Cameron (March 18, 1836 – May 11, 1918) was a Canadian politician and a member of the House of Commons of Canada for the riding of Iverness in Nova Scotia. He was born in Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, the son of Alexander Cameron and Liz Cameron. Cameron studied at Saint Francis Xavier College and, in 1861, graduated in medicine from the University of Pennsylvania and also from the School of Practical Obstetrics in Philadelphia. He practiced medicine at Mabou in Cape Breton. He studied further at Bellevue Hospital medical school in New York City from 1864 to 1865 before returning to his practice. Cameron also served as surgeon for the militia. He was elected as a member of the Anti-Confederation Party to the 1st Canadian Parliament on September 20, 1867. The Municipality of the County of Inverness is a county municipality on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. It provides local government to about 17,000 residents of the historical county of the same name, except for the incorporated town of Port Hawkesbury and the Whycocomagh 2 Miꞌkmaq reserve, both of which are enclaves. Public services are provided in the areas of recreation, tourism, administration, finance, and public works.
