International Nongovernmental Organization
An international non-governmental organization (INGO) is an organization which is independent of government involvement and extends the concept of a non-governmental organization (NGO) to an international scope. NGOs are independent of governments and can be seen as two types: ''advocacy NGOs'', which aim to influence governments with a specific goal, and ''operational NGOs'', which provide services. Examples of NGO mandates are environmental preservation, human rights promotions or the advancement of women. NGOs are typically not-for-profit, but receive funding from companies or membership fees. Many large INGOs have components of operational projects and advocacy initiatives working together within individual countries. The technical term "international organizations" describes intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and include groups such as the United Nations or the International Labour Organization, which are formed by treaties among sovereign states. In contrast, INGOs are ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Wendell Helms Fleming (born March 7, 1928) is an American mathematician, specializing in geometrical analysis and stochastic differential equations. Fleming received in 1951 his PhD under Laurence Chisholm Young at the University of Wisconsin–Madison with a thesis entitled ''Boundary and related notions for generalized parametric surfaces''. Fleming was a professor at Brown University, where he retired in 2009 as professor emeritus. Fleming was with Herbert Federer a pioneer of geometric measure theory. Later in his career, he worked on stochastic processes, stochastic differential equations and their applications in control theory. In 1976–1977 he was a Guggenheim Fellow. In 1982 he gave a plenary address (''Optimal control of Markov Processes'') at the ICM in Warsaw. Awards and honors In 1987 he received with Federer the Leroy P. George Leitmann
George Leitmann (born May 24, 1925) is an Austrian-born American engineering scientist and educator. Early life and education Leitmann was born on May 24, 1925, to a fully assimilated Jewish family in Vienna, Austria. His paternal grandfather was a career officer with the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Imperial Army. His father had been a volunteer in the Austrian Army in World War I and was wounded twice on the Serbian front. Nonetheless, by the spring of 1940 the situation in Austria had become so dangerous that George's father fled to neighboring Yugoslavia, still an independent kingdom, and the rest of the family, George, his mother and two grandmothers, were able to emigrate to the US in April 1940. Tragically, Yugoslavia was occupied by Germany a year later and George's father was murdered in a concentration camp in Nis, Serbia. George attended a Technical High School in New York from which he graduated in December 1943, whereupon he immediately volunteered for the Arm ... Differential Games
In game theory, differential games are a group of problems related to the modeling and analysis of conflict in the context of a dynamical system. More specifically, a state variable or variables evolve over time according to a differential equation. Early analyses reflected military interests, considering two actors—the pursuer and the evader—with diametrically opposed goals. More recent analyses have reflected engineering or economic considerations. Connection to optimal control Differential games are related closely with optimal control problems. In an optimal control problem there is single control u(t) and a single criterion to be optimized; differential game theory generalizes this to two controls u_(t),u_(t) and two criteria, one for each player. Each player attempts to control the state of the system so as to achieve its goal; the system responds to the inputs of all players. History In the study of competition, differential games have been employed since a 1925 artic ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Rufus Philip Isaacs (June 11, 1914 – January 18, 1981) was a game theorist especially prominent in the 1950s and 1960s with his work on differential games. Biography Isaacs was born on 11 June 1914 in New York City. He worked for the RAND Corporation from 1948 until winter 1954/1955. Birkhäuser
Birkhäuser was a Swiss publisher founded in 1879 by Emil Birkhäuser. It was acquired by Springer Science+Business Media in 1985. Today it is an imprint used by two companies in unrelated fields: * Springer continues to publish science (particularly: history of science, geosciences, computer science) and mathematics books and journals under the Birkhäuser imprint (with a leaf logo) sometimes called Birkhäuser Science. * Birkhäuser Verlag – an architecture and design publishing company was (re)created in 2010 when Springer sold its design and architecture segment to ACTAR. The resulting Spanish-Swiss company was then called ActarBirkhäuser. After a bankruptcy, in 2012 Birkhäuser Verlag was sold again, this time to De Gruyter. Additionally, the Reinach-based printer Birkhäuser+GBC operates independently of the above, being now owned by ''Basler Zeitung''. History The original Swiss publishers program focused on regional literature. In the 1920s the sons of Emil Birkh ...
