Inkodye
Lumi is a Los Angeles-based company founded by Jesse Genet and Stephan Ango that offers packaging and supply chain management software. The company got its start developing Inkodye, a photo-reactive vat dye that develops its color through exposure to Ultraviolet, UV or sunlight. History Jesse Genet began experimenting with different printing techniques as a teenager in 2004, attempting to print photographs on cotton T-shirts. Unsatisfied with the results of screen printing and dye-sublimation she pursued her research and found what became a precursor to Inkodye, a chemical formula from the 1950s owned by a retired engineer. After meeting Stephan Ango while studying at Art Center College of Design, the pair acquired the chemical formula and began modernizing it. Lumi launched a Kickstarter campaign in December 2009 to fund Research and development, R&D of the technology. Vat Dye
Vat dyes are a class of dyes that are classified as such because of the method by which they are applied. Vat dyeing is a process that refers to dyeing that takes place in a bucket or vat. The original vat dye is indigo, once obtained only from plants but now often produced synthetically. Materials suited for vat dyeing Although almost all dyeing can be done in a vat, the term vat dye is used to describe a chemical class of dyes that are applied to cellulosic fibre (''i.e.'', cotton) using a redox reaction as described below. Because of the use of caustic soda, and the very high pH of the dye bath in the dyeing process, wool cannot be dyed using vat dyestuffs. This is because wool is soluble in caustic soda solutions. Instead, it is possible to dye wool at room temperatures with indigo (vat blue 1) and other low substantive vat dyes using soda ash as the alkali source with very little strength loss. Jesse Genet
Jesse Genet is an American businesswoman who is the co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Lumi, a firm that produces packaging and other branded materials for ecommerce ventures. Early life and education Genet was born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. Her mother was a school teacher and her father was an attorney. When she was 15, her mother divorced her father and later married a technology entrepreneur whom Genet credits with shaping her changing worldview. Her first entrepreneurial venture was printing T-shirts in the basement at age 16. This company became known as Inkodye, of which she became the CEO in 2010. She later attended the ArtCenter College of Design, where she met her future business partner and collaborator, Stephan Ango. Digital Negative (transparency)
The digital negative is the collective name for methods used by photographers to create negatives on transparency film for the contact printing of alternative photographic techniques. The negatives can also be enlarged using traditional gelatin silver processes, though this is usually reserved for negatives of 4x5" or larger due to quality limitations imposed by printer technology. This set of techniques is separate from the Digital negative (DNG) file format, although this format may be used to create digital negative transparencies. Uses Digital negatives are typically used with one of the alternative processes such as gum bichromate, cyanotype, or Inkodye. Van Dyke Brown (printing)
Van Dyke brown is a printing process named after Anthony van Dyck. It involves coating a canvas with ferric ammonium citrate, tartaric acid, and silver nitrate, then exposing it to ultraviolet light. The canvas can be washed with water, and hypo to keep the solutions in place. The image created has a Van Dyke brown color when it's completed, and unlike other printing methods, does not require a darkroom.
