Ice hockey is a relatively new sport in Iran and is seeing increased popularity. The first official game in the country was played in 2016. The Iran men's national ice hockey team, national team was also founded in 2016. History Ice hockey was played recreationally before the 1979 Iranian Revolution, however it was banned shortly after. The first official game of Ice hockey was played in Iran on 1 October 2016, between Padideh Shandiz and Khorasan Razavi which was played at the Padideh Ice Rink in Mashhad. National team The Iranian men's national team was founded in June 2016. The team played its first international game on 18 February 2017, losing to Macau men's national ice hockey team, Macau 7–1, however Iran was supposed to participate at the Ice hockey at the 2017 Asian Winter Games, 2017 Asian Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan, but was disqualified due to the number of Iranian players were deemed ineligible in the regional games. The Iran national ice hockey team ( fa, تیم ملی هاکی روی یخ ایران) is the national men's ice hockey team of Iran. The team was founded in June 2016, is controlled by the Islamic Republic of Iran Skating Federation, and on 26 September 2019, became an associate member of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Iran made its debut in the IIHF World Championship in 2022. As of 2022, Iran is ranked 56th in the IIHF World Ranking. The Iranian Revolution ( fa, انقلاب ایران, Enqelâb-e Irân, ), also known as the Islamic Revolution ( fa, انقلاب اسلامی, Enqelâb-e Eslâmī), was a series of events that culminated in the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and the replacement of his government with an Islamic republic under the rule of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, a leader of one of the factions in the revolt. Ice Hockey At The 2017 Asian Winter Games
Ice hockey at the 2017 Asian Winter Games was held in Sapporo, Japan between 18–26 February at three venues (Tsukisamu Gymnasium, Mikaho Gymnasium and the Hoshioki Skating Rink). A total of 18 men's teams competed in three divisions (four in Top Division, six in Division I and eight in Division II), along with six women's teams. Originally 20 men's teams were scheduled to compete, however Bahrain withdrew. Iran was also scheduled to compete, however after arriving, more than half the team was deemed ineligible to represent the country due to eligibility issues. Thus the team was disqualified. However the country still played its matches as friendlies, but they did not count towards the standings.
