The Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores - Investigação e Desenvolvimento (INESC-ID) is a non-profit, privately owned institution of public interest, in Lisbon, Portugal, dedicated to advanced research and development in the domains of electronics, energy, telecommunications and information technologies. It was awarded the status of Associate Laboratory of the Portuguese Ministry for Science and Technology in 2005. History and organization INESC-ID was founded in 2000, from a branch of Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores (INESC), and was awarded in 2005 with the status of "Laboratório Associado". The founding associates are INESC and Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), the engineering school of the University of Lisbon. Instituto Superior Técnico MHSE • MHIP (IST, also known colloquially as Técnico, and stylized TÉCNICO LISBOA) is a public school of engineering and technology, part of University of Lisbon. It was founded as an autonomous school in 1911, and integrated in the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa in 1930. IST is the largest school of engineering in Portugal by number of enrolled students, faculty size, scientific production and patents. The University of Lisbon (ULisboa; pt, Universidade de Lisboa, ) is a public research university in Lisbon, and the largest university in Portugal. It was founded in 2013, from the merger of two previous public universities located in Lisbon, the former University of Lisbon (1911–2013) and the Technical University of Lisbon (1930–2013).
