Hugo Mann
Hugo Mann (17 November 191320 December 2008) was a German businessman. Early life He was born in Laupheim. As a youth, Hugo Mann worked at his grandfather's shop in Karlsruhe where he started his own furniture business in 1938. Career In 1950, Mann opened a larger store that turned out to be the key to his success. During the sixties, chain stores sprouted up across Germany. The brand ''Mann Mobilia'' for discount quality furniture was established in 1970. Mann had started another business in 1958, the '' Wertkauf'' food store chains. Mann bought two-thirds of FedMart, a highly successful chain of department stores in the United States, in 1975. Laupheim
Laupheim (; Swabian: ''Laoba'') is a major district town in southern Germany in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Laupheim was first mentioned in 778 and gained city rights in 1869. One of the main trading routes, from Ulm to Ravensburg and then on towards Lake Constance ran through Laupheim. Having developed from a rural settlement into a small urban area, Laupheim is home to a number of small to medium-sized industries and businesses. One of the largest employers are the German Armed Forces which maintain an airbase close to Laupheim, Laupheim Air Base. Laupheim was the administrative centre of the district of Laupheim from 1842 until 1938 when the district was abolished. The southern parts of it were incorporated into the district of Biberach (including Laupheim itself) whereas the remainders were allocated to the district of Ulm. Wertkauf was a German retail group that had 21 markets until its takeover by the US supermarket chain Wal-Mart in 1997. The group's head office was in Karlsruhe. History The first branch opened in 1958 in Karlsruhe. In 1966, a value purchase center with 3,500 m2 was opened in Freiburg. The new Karlsruhe shopping center built during was destroyed on 26 August 1969 during one of the worst major fires in the history of the city. Sol Price (January 23, 1916December 14, 2009) was the founder of FedMart, Price Club (which ultimately merged into Costco) and PriceSmart. He is considered a pioneer of the " warehouse store" retail model. Early life and education Price was born in The Bronx in New York City, the son of Samuel and Bella Price, Jewish immigrants to the United States from Minsk (Belarus), in the early years of the 20th century. The family relocated to San Diego in the early 1920s. Price graduated from San Diego High School in 1931, attended San Diego State University in 1932, and earned his undergraduate degree (in philosophy) and a law degree from the University of Southern California in 1936 and 1938, respectively.
