Hop Along
Hop Along is an American indie rock band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, formerly known as Hop Along, Queen Ansleis. History Hop Along began as an acoustic freak folk solo project known as Hop Along, Queen Ansleis in 2004, during Frances Quinlan's senior year in high school. Quinlan released their debut album ''Freshman Year'' in the summer of 2005. Quinlan performed an acoustic solo act for several years as they honed their style. "I would envy ull ensemblesbecause I thought that a band inherently carries more energy than a person does solo. I suppose you could argue that point, but when I was playing by myself it was just out of necessity. I wanted to play and I just couldn’t seem to get a band together. Get Disowned
''Get Disowned'' is Hop Along's second full-length album. It was released in March 2012 on Hot Green Records in the US and Big Scary Monsters in the UK/Europe. In 2016 it was reissued by Saddle Creek. Background and recording Hop Along approached former Algernon Cadwallader guitarist Joe Reinhart to produce the album because vocalist Frances Quinlan preferred to work with a friend rather than a stranger. The band was met with time constraints during recording due to the members being involved with other projects. Consequently, the recording process lasted two years. Because of this, Quinlan described the album as a "collage". Reception and legacy "Tibetan Pop Stars", the album's second track, has continued to receive critical acclaim in recent years. In a 2020 list ranking emo's 100 best songs, the staff of ''Vulture'' placed the track highly at #10. Psychedelic folk (sometimes acid folk or freak folk) is a loosely defined form of psychedelia that originated in the 1960s. It retains the largely acoustic instrumentation of folk, but adds musical elements common to psychedelic music. Headroom Studios is a music recording studio in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was originally started by Kyle Pulley and Joe Reinhart in 2008 in a room in a live/work artist warehouse collective, located in North Philadelphia, until it moved to its current location in a commercial building in the North Philadelphia neighborhood of Kensington. Pulley and Reinhart were college classmates who were active in the Philadelphia DIY punk scene who decided to partner after graduation in order create the studio to start their careers in music. It was co-produced, recorded and mixed by John Agnello in at Headroom Studios, in Philadelphia and Fluxivity Studios in Brooklyn, and released on May 4, 2015. Background and recording Vocalist Frances Quinlan stated that much of the album was tracked live. Composition Musical style Pitchfork likened the album's style to the "romantic, middle-American indie" of artists such as Bright Eyes and Rilo Kiley, while crediting punk rock for the band's "energy". Lyrical content The album's lyrical subject matter addresses topics such as poverty, abuse and mental illness. These are also sometimes referred to as "house shows" as they can happen anywhere in a residential house, not just in the basement.
