HŽ Series 2062
The HŽ Series 2062 is a class of diesel-electric locomotives belonging to Croatian Railways ( hr, hrvatske željeznice, HŽ). They are examples of the EMD G26 locomotive series. Prior to the breakup of Yugoslavia, when in use with JŽ these locos were classified as JŽ 664-0. Of the original 64 JŽ locomotives, 56 found their way to HŽ, with the remainder in use with ŽS. HŽ have modernised 20 class 2062s, reclassifying them as 2062-1s. The work was carried out by Gredelj & Turner. The main usage for 2062s is in Lika, Dalmatia, Istria with a few in Slavonia. The -1 subclass is used only on Lika-Dalmatia services. Rail transport (also known as train transport) is a means of transport that transfers passengers and goods on wheeled vehicles running on rails, which are incorporated in tracks. In contrast to road transport, where the vehicles run on a prepared flat surface, rail vehicles (rolling stock) are directionally guided by the tracks on which they run. Tracks usually consist of steel rails, installed on sleepers (ties) set in ballast, on which the rolling stock, usually fitted with metal wheels, moves. Co-Co is the wheel arrangement for diesel or electric locomotives with two six-wheeled bogies with all axles powered, with a separate traction motor per axle. The equivalent UIC classification (Europe) for this arrangement is Co′Co′, or C-C for AAR (North America). Use Co-Cos are most suited to freight work as the extra wheels give them good traction. They are also popular because the greater number of axles results in a lower axle load to the track. History The first mainline diesel-electric locomotives were of Bo-Bo arrangement. As they grew in power and weight, from 1937 the EMD E-units used an A1A-A1A layout with six axles to reduce axle load, but only four of them were powered. After WWII, the British LMS ordered two prototype locomotives with some of the first Co-Co arrangements. JŽ 664 Locomotive
The JŽ 664 locomotives were a class of diesel locomotives operated by Yugoslav Railways. They are an GM-EMD export model of type EMD G26, subclass 664-0 was built by EMD, subclass 664-1 was built by Đuro Đaković from 1972 until 1984. After the breakup of Yugoslavia the locomotives were split. General Motors Diesel
General Motors Diesel was a railway diesel locomotive manufacturer located in London, Ontario, Canada. It was established in 1949 as the Canadian subsidiary of the Electro-Motive Diesel division of General Motors (EMD). In 1969 it was re-organized as the "Diesel Division of General Motors of Canada, Ltd." The plant was re-purposed to include manufacture of other diesel-powered General Motors vehicles such as buses. Following the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement in 1989, all of EMD's locomotives were built at the London facility. Breakup Of Yugoslavia
The breakup of Yugoslavia occurred as a result of a series of political upheavals and conflicts during the early 1990s. After a period of political and economic crisis in the 1980s, constituent republics of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia split apart, but the unresolved issues caused bitter inter-ethnic Yugoslav wars.
