Hyakki Yagyō
''Hyakki Yagyō'' (, "Night Parade of One Hundred Demons"), also transliterated ''Hyakki Yakō'', is an idiom in Japanese folklore. Sometimes an orderly procession, other times a riot, it refers to a parade of thousands of supernatural creatures known as ''oni'' and ''yōkai'' that march through the streets of Japan at night. As a terrifying eruption of the supernatural into the real world, it is similar (though not precisely equivalent) to the concept of pandemonium in English. Emakimono
or is an illustrated horizontal narration system of painted handscrolls that dates back to Nara-period (710–794 CE) Japan. Initially copying their much older Chinese counterparts in style, during the succeeding Heian (794–1185) and Kamakura periods (1185–1333), Japanese developed their own distinct style. The term therefore refers only to Japanese painted narrative scrolls. Nurarihyon No Mago
is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hiroshi Shiibashi. It was serialized in Shueisha's ''Weekly Shōnen Jump'' from March 2008 to June 2012, and later in ''Jump Next!'' from August to December 2012. Its chapters were collected in twenty-five ''tankōbon'' volumes by Shueisha. A 24-episode anime adaptation produced by Studio Deen was broadcast in Japan from July to December 2010. A 24-episode second season, titled ''Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan - Demon Capital'', was broadcast from July to December 2011. In North America, Viz Media licensed the series for English-language release of the manga and anime adaptations. Nightmarchers
In Hawaiian mythology, Nightmarchers (''huaka'i pō'' or "Spirit Ranks,",'' 'oi'o'') are the deadly ghosts of ancient Hawaiian warriors. The nightmarchers are the vanguard for a sacred king, chief or chiefess. On the nights honoring the Hawaiian gods Kāne, Kū, Lono, or on the nights of Kanaloa they are said to come forth from their burial sites, or to rise up from the ocean, and to march in a large group to ancient Hawaiian battle sites or other sacred places. The legend says the night marchers are normal-size warriors, dressed for battle, carrying spears, clubs, and some are beating war drums and blowing tones from conch shells, to announce the advancing of their march. Gazu Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro
is the fourth book in Japanese artist Toriyama Sekien's famous ''Gazu Hyakki Yagyō'' tetralogy. A version of the tetralogy translated and annotated in English was published in 2016. The title is a pun; "hyakki", normally written with the characters "hundred" and "''oni''", is instead written with "hundred" and "vessels". This hints that the majority of the ''yōkai'' portrayed in its pages are of the variety known as ''tsukumogami'', man-made objects taken sentient form. ''Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro'' is preceded in the series by ''Gazu Hyakki Yagyō'', ''Konjaku Gazu Zoku Hyakki'', and ''Konjaku Hyakki Shūi''. Utagawa Yoshiiku
, also known as or , was a Japanese artist of the Utagawa school. Life and career Born the son of teahouse proprietor Asakusa Tamichi in 1833, Yoshiiku became a student of ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi toward the end of the 1840s. His earliest known work dates to 1852 when he provided the backgrounds to some actor prints by his master. Yoshiiku's earliest works were portraits of actors (yakusha-e), beauties (bijin-ga), and warriors (musha-e). He later followed Kuniyoshi into making satirical and humorous pieces, and became the leading name in the field after Kuniyosh's death in 1861. Muromachi
The is a division of Japanese history running from approximately 1336 to 1573.
