Hugh C. Barr
Hugh C. Barr (1878–1960), of New York City, was a stamp dealer and auctioneer who started out in the stamp business in 1900. Selling stamps Barr was a respected dealer and started selling stamps by auction in 1931, continuing selling by auction for the next twenty five years. Barr was responsible for selling parts of famous collections: the Match and Medicine collection of Clarence Eagle and the personal collection of fellow stamp dealer and auctioneer Percy Gray Doane. Philatelic activity Barr was active within the American Stamp Dealers Association and supported its participation in TIPEX in 1926 and 1936 and CIPEX in 1947. After selling his stamp business in 1956, he continued on as an advisor and expert. Honors and awards Hugh C. Barr was named to the American Philatelic Society Hall of Fame in 1963. American Stamp Dealers Association
The American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) is an international philatelic organization of stamp dealers. History ASDA was founded in 1914 as an association “dedicated to promoting integrity, honesty and reliability, and we are the hobby builders of philately.” The ASDA is structured similarly to other philatelic organizations, with a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, board of directors, general counsel, and various committees and regional chapters. It is located at 217-14 Northern Blvd., Suite 205, Bayside, New York 11361. Membership Membership is open to all dealers and sellers of postage stamps and revenue stamps who agree to abide by the rules and regulations of ASDA. The American Philatelic Society Hall of Fame award honors deceased philatelists who have contributed significantly to the field of national and/or international philately. History The APS ''Hall of Fame'' award was founded at the 1940 American Philatelic Society Convention. The award is intended to honor those deceased philatelists who have made significant contributions during their lifetime to the field of philately. The award is not to be confused with the society's Luff Award which is presented to outstanding philatelists who are alive at the time of award. It also includes individuals who sell postage stamps for day to day use or revenue stamps for use on court documents. Percy Gray Doane (1877–1945) was a philatelic dealer from New York City.Birch, Brian. (2013) Biographies of Philatelists and Dealers'. 13th edition. Standish, Wigan: Brian Birch, p. 773. He was born in Brooklyn on January 13, 1878 and died there on March 28, 1945. Philatelic activity Percy Doane established his philatelic dealership and auction house in New York City in 1897 and was highly respected within the philatelic community for his integrity. Doane conducted a total of 348 auctions of postage stamps and related postal history material during his career. He assisted several notorious stamp collectors, including Col. E. H. R. Green, Judge Robert Emerson, Clarence Eagle and Benno Loewy, to build up or sell their collections or portions of their collections. Philately
Philately (; ) is the study of postage stamps and postal history. It also refers to the collection and appreciation of stamps and other philatelic products. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting or the study of postage; it is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. For instance, the stamps being studied may be very rare or reside only in museums. Etymology The word "philately" is the English transliteration of the French "", coined by Georges Herpin in 1864.
