APS Hall Of Fame
The American Philatelic Society Hall of Fame award honors deceased philatelists who have contributed significantly to the field of national and/or international philately. History The APS ''Hall of Fame'' award was founded at the 1940 American Philatelic Society Convention. The award is intended to honor those deceased philatelists who have made significant contributions during their lifetime to the field of philately. The award is not to be confused with the society's Luff Award which is presented to outstanding philatelists who are alive at the time of award. Requirements Requirements for the APS Hall of Fame are: * only deceased collectors may be considered for nomination * those nominated must have made "outstanding contributions to the advancement of national or international philately." Philately
Philately (; ) is the study of postage stamps and postal history. It also refers to the collection and appreciation of stamps and other philatelic products. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting or the study of postage; it is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. For instance, the stamps being studied may be very rare or reside only in museums. Etymology The word "philately" is the English transliteration of the French "", coined by Georges Herpin in 1864. Herpin stated that stamps had been collected and studied for the previous six or seven years and a better name was required for the new hobby than ''timbromanie'' (roughly "stamp quest"), which was disliked.Williams, L.N. & M. Edward Spring Knapp
Edward Spring Knapp (September 10, 1879 – April 5, 1940), of New York City, was a philatelist known for his remarkable collections of postage stamps and postal history. Collecting interests Knapp specialized in the postage stamps postal history of the United States and the Confederate States of America. However, he even specialized more within his United States collecting interests: his collection of posted hotel covers contained very rare items and was considered unsurpassed. His hotel covers collection won numerous awards including international ones in 1926 and 1936. Knapp worked with Stanley Bryan Ashbrook on several projects, including determining the exact position of each stamp printed on a pane of stamps, called plating. Major James Starr
Major James Starr (April 5, 1870 – March 13, 1948), of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was one of the earliest philatelists who collected, studied, and wrote on, stamps of China. Collecting interests Starr was particularly interested in studying the large Dragons of 1878-1883 as well as China's air post issues. His collections on exhibit were famous and award-winning. Co-authored with Samuel J. Mills, Starr wrote ''The Chinese Air-Post, 1920–1935'', which was based on his own collection of Chinese postal history. It was published around 1937. Edward Haven Mason
Edward Haven Mason (June 8, 1849 – March 21, 1917), of Boston, Massachusetts, was the first philatelist to study, and to write on, proofs and essays of United States postage stamps and postal stationery. Collecting interests Mason specialized in collecting and studying proofs and essays related to United States postal history and wrote extensively on the subject. His books include: ''Essays for United States Postage Stamps'', published in 1911, ''The Proofs and Essays for U.S. Envelopes'', also in 1911, and ''More Essays for United States Postage Stamps'', in 1912. Mason's listings of proofs and essays were the basis for their listing in Scott U.S. Specialized Catalogue of Stamps. Alfred Lichtenstein (philatelist)
Alfred F. Lichtenstein (August 6, 1876 – February 24, 1947) was one of the most famous American philatelists. Biography Alfred Lichtenstein's classic stamp collections were one of the most complete, with a passion for stamps issued before 1870. He collected stamps issued by Canadian provinces and the Confederation of Canada, Switzerland, Cape Colony, Ceylon, Gambia, Mauritius, Argentina and Uruguay. Considering the postal history of the United States, his collection was a reference for "Western Express". He was an active member of the Collectors Club of New York which was developed by Lichtenstein and his friend Theodore Steinway. He was also a member of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada. An international philatelic judge during three decades, he was the commissioner of international philatelic exhibitions of 1913, 1926 and 1936 (the last two in New York). William Carlos Stone
William Carlos Stone (October 9, 1859 – February 23, 1939) was a philatelist who specialized in the collection of philatelic literature related to revenue stamps and postal stationery. Collecting interests Stone collected and studied United States revenue stamps, and, at the same time, accumulated a large library consisting mostly of philatelic literature related to revenue stamps. He assisted his fellow philatelist William Reynolds Ricketts in the preparation of Ricketts' famous index of philatelic literature. Philatelic activity Stone helped found the American Philatelic Association, which later became the American Philatelic Society, and he continued to support the organization his entire philatelic career. Julius (John) Murray Bartels
J. Murray Bartels (born Julius Murray Bartels; July 15, 1871 – October 5, 1944) was a New York City-based dealer and auctioneer of rare postage stamps. He was also well known for his knowledge of United States postal stationery. Family Barthels was born in Warrenton, Fauquier County, Virginia, one of six or so siblings born to Hermann Friedrich Bartels and Sally Innes Bartels. His father was born in Germany. Collecting interests Bartels was primarily interested in United States postal stationery and became an expert on the subject. He published the result of his studies in ''J.M. Bartels and Co.'s Catalogue and Reference List of the Stamped Envelopes, Wrappers and Letter Sheets'' in 1897, and several editions of ''Envelopes of the United States'', from 1910-38. Percy Gray Doane
Percy Gray Doane (1877–1945) was a philatelic dealer from New York City.Birch, Brian. (2013) Biographies of Philatelists and Dealers'. 13th edition. Standish, Wigan: Brian Birch, p. 773. He was born in Brooklyn on January 13, 1878 and died there on March 28, 1945. Philatelic activity Percy Doane established his philatelic dealership and auction house in New York City in 1897 and was highly respected within the philatelic community for his integrity. Doane conducted a total of 348 auctions of postage stamps and related postal history material during his career. He assisted several notorious stamp collectors, including Col. E. H. R. Green, Judge Robert Emerson, Clarence Eagle and Benno Loewy, to build up or sell their collections or portions of their collections. Willard Otis Wylie
Willard Otis Wylie (December 25, 1862 – November 30, 1944), of Boston, Massachusetts, was a noted philatelic editor and writer. Philatelic literature In 1898 Wylie joined the ''Mekeel's Weekly Stamp News'' company and, in 1903, was named editor of the ''Weekly Philatelic Era'', which was, by that time, owned and merged by ''Mekeel’s''. In 1913 the newly formed Severn-Wylie-Jewett Company, a partnership formed by Charles Esterly Severn, W. W. Jewett, and Wylie, purchased ''Mekeel's Weekly Stamp News'' and named Charles Severn its president and editor. Willard Wylie was assigned as vice president and managing editor. As part of his duties, Wylie was managing editor of ''Mekeel's Handbooks'', each of which contained articles and monographs on important philatelic subjects. Charles Foster Richards
Charles Foster Richards (July 9, 1866 – November 29, 1944), of New York City, was a lifelong stamp collector and a charter member of the American Philatelic Association (now called the American Philatelic Society). Collecting interests Richards specialized in the collection and study of postage stamps of Hawaii, including postal history, revenue stamps, and postal stationery. As an early expert on stamps of Hawaii, he published, in 1916, ''A Check List of the Stamps of Hawaii - and More'', and, in 1938, he added more material to it. He also wrote a paper entitled ''Hawaiian Stamped Envelopes'' which was included, in 1916, in Mekeel's Handbook No. 10, ''Postage Stamps and Stationery of the Hawaiian Islands''. Eugene Klein (philatelist)
Eugene Klein (June 26, 1878 – April 30, 1944) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was an internationally known stamp collector, stamp dealer, and auctioneer who was President of the American Philatelic Society from 1935 to 1937. Philatelic activity Klein was the Official Expert of the American Philatelic Society from 1911 to 1931 and its International Secretary from 1928 to 1935 and 1937 to 1944. He also served as President (1935–1937) and International Secretary again from 1937 until his death.
