Hovsep Arghutian
Prince Hovsep Arghutian (; 1863 – 1925), also known as Khanasori Ishkhan and Ishkhan Arghutian, was an Armenian military commander and political activist. Biography Hovsep Arghutian was born in Sanahin, Tiflis Governorate, Russian Empire to an aristocratic family. His family drew its descent from the Armenian Argutinsky-Dolgorukov noble family . Arghutian graduated from the Nersisian Seminary in Tiflis and was a school teacher in the village of Jalaloghly (now Stepanavan, Armenia). In the late 1880s, he took up an active role in the Armenian affairs in the Ottoman Empire. In 1889, he made his way into the empire's eastern Anatolian provinces, where he worked with underground revolutionary groups, including the leader Arabo. He participated in the 1897 Khanasor Expedition. Afterward, he was arrested as a Russian citizen by Persian authorities and sent to Vologda, but was soon released. Sanahin
Sanahin () is a village in the northern province of Lori in Armenia, now considered part of the city of Alaverdi (a cable car connects it with Alaverdi). The village is notable for its Sanahin Monastery complex, founded in the 10th century and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the monastery in nearby Haghpat. Arabo
Arabo ( hy, Արաբօ, 1863–1893), born Arakel Mkhitarian, was an Armenian fedayi of the late 19th century. Arabo was born in the village of Kurter or Korter ( or ) in the region of Sasun in the Bitlis vilayet. Arabo studied at the Arakelots Monastery school in Mush. Beginning in the late-1880s, he led the Armenian fedayi groups in Sasun and Taron. According to Armenian revolutionary Ruben Ter Minasian, Arabo and started off as a bandit whose group "terrorized the environs of the City of Moush, blocked the roads, staged holdups, killed and robbed, seized entire flocks of sheep and cattle", but became a revolutionary during his time in the Caucasus. Starting in 1889, Arabo visited the Caucasus several times. In 1892, he was arrested by Turkish authorities and sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment, but escaped from prison and resumed his fedayi activities. Armenian Fedayi
''Fedayi'' (Western hy, Ֆէտայի ''Fedayi''; Eastern hy, Ֆիդայի ''Fidayi''), also known as the Armenian irregular units or Armenian militia, were Armenian civilians who voluntarily left their families to form self-defense units and irregular armed bands in reaction to the mass murder of Armenians and the pillage of Armenian villages by criminals, Kurdish gangs, Turkish forces, and Hamidian guards during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II in late 19th and early 20th centuries, known as the Hamidian massacres. Their ultimate goal was always to gain Armenian autonomy ( Armenakans) or independence (Dashnaks, Hunchaks) depending on their ideology and the degree of oppression visited on Armenians. Some of the key Fedayi figures also participated in the Iranian Constitutional Revolution that commenced during the same period, upon agreement of the ARF leaders.
