House Rock Valley
House Rock Valley is a valley on Paria Plateau, north of the Grand Canyon, in Coconino County, Arizona, United States. The valley was named by the John Wesley Powell Expedition after a rock formation in the valley where they spent the night in 1871. House Rock is a ghost town near the northwest end of the House Rock Valley in northern Coconino County, Arizona, Coconino County, Arizona, United States. The community was named after the House Rock Valley, which was named by the John Wesley Powell Expedition in 1871. (However, the site where the expedition spent the night and the community are on the opposite ends of the valley.) Description The mostly abandoned locale is just east of the Kaibab National Forest and the mouth of House Rock Canyon (Coconino County, Arizona), House Rock Canyon at the southwest corner of, but just outside of, the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument (which was established in 2000). John Wesley Powell
John Wesley Powell (March 24, 1834 – September 23, 1902) was an American geologist, U.S. Army soldier, explorer of the American West, professor at Illinois Wesleyan University, and director of major scientific and cultural institutions. He is famous for his 1869 geographic expedition, a three-month river trip down the Green and Colorado rivers, including the first official U.S. government-sponsored passage through the Grand Canyon. Powell was appointed by US President James A. Garfield to serve as the second director of the U.S. Geological Survey (1881–1894) and proposed, for development of the arid West, policies that were prescient for his accurate evaluation of conditions. Two years prior to his service as director of the U.S. Geological Survey, Major Powell had become the first director of the Bureau of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution where he supported linguistic and sociological research and publications.
