Hougang United
Hougang United Football Club is a Singaporean professional football club that competes in the Singapore Premier League. History Hougang United Football Club was founded as Marine Castle United Football Club, which was formed by Newcastle United fans in the Marine Parade area. Upon successful entry into the S.League in 1998, the club struggled in its early foray in the first few years, finishing in the bottom two for the next four seasons. Marine Castle changed its name to Sengkang Marine Football Club in 2002 and finished in 8th position consecutively, its highest ever finish in its short history. Financial difficulties then forced Sengkang Marine out of the S.League in 2004, and Paya Lebar-Punggol Football Club took its place in 2005, finishing the season as wooden-spoonist. The two clubs then merged their resources from 2006 to 2010 to form Sengkang Punggol Football Club, finishing no higher than 10th. Hougang Stadium
Hougang Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium located at the junction of Hougang Avenue 2 and Hougang Avenue 10 in Hougang, Singapore. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Hougang United FC. The public can use the facilities from 4:30 am to 8:30 pm daily unless it is exclusively booked for a sporting event. The stadium has a capacity of 3,800 people. 2009 Singapore Cup
The Singapore Cup 2009 (known as the RHB Singapore Cup due to its main sponsor) started on 27 April 2009. It was the 12th staging of the annual Singapore Cup tournament. 12 S.League clubs and 4 invited foreign teams from Thailand (2 teams), Cambodia (1) and Indonesia (1) played in this edition. The cup was a single-elimination tournament, with all sixteen teams playing from the first round. The first round involved one-off matches. Subsequent rounds involved ties of two legs. The final was played on 8 November and won by Geylang United, who beat Bangkok Glass 1–0. The cup winner were guaranteed a place in the 2010 AFC Cup. 2008 Singapore League Cup
The 2008 Singapore League Cup marks the second occasion on which the Singapore League Cup competition has been staged. (The event was launched in 2007). Its official sponsored name for 2008 is the Avaya- J&J League Cup. In 2007, the event was held before the start of the S.League season (and serving as a pre-season warm-up tournament), and was won by Woodlands Wellington FC. However, in 2008, the event is being held during the S.League season. All 12 S.League teams have entered the 2008 competition. The cup is being played over four rounds. The top four teams in the S.League in 2007 were given a bye to the Quarter-Final stage. The final will be played on 16 June at Jalan Besar Stadium. 2007 Singapore League Cup
The inaugural Singapore League Cup was held in 2007. The tournament was held before the start of the S.League season that year. Prior to this tournament, there is another tournament with the same name that was held until in 1997 where the Singapore Armed Forces had defeated Geylang United by 1-0 in the final. However that old Singapore League Cup was subsequently renamed into present Singapore Cup and evolved to be the major cup competition in Singapore football. In recent years, invitational foreign teams participated in the Singapore Cup along with the local clubs. The League Cup, however, is solely reserved for domestic clubs. The 2007 competition was sponsored by SingTel, and officially titled the SingTel League Cup.
