Horace Barnes
Horace Barnes (3 January 1891 – 12 September 1961) was an English footballer, who played for Derby County, Manchester City, Preston North End and Oldham Athletic. Early life Horace Barnes was born in Sheffield in 1891. He began his football career playing as an inside left for Wadsley Bridge. During the First World War, he worked in munitions and served in the Royal Garrison Artillery. Derby County In 1908 Jimmy Methven signed Horace for Derby County. Barnes made 166 appearances for Derby and scored 76 goals. He scored both goals for an English XI in a 2–0 victory over their Scottish counterparts in a Players' Union international on 20 April 1914. Manchester City In 1914 Manchester City purchased Barnes for £2,500.00. Maine Road was a football stadium in Moss Side, Manchester, England, that was home to Manchester City F.C. from 1923 to 2003. It hosted FA Cup semi-finals, the Charity Shield, a League Cup final and England matches. Frank Roberts (footballer, Born 1893)
Frank Roberts (3 April 1893 – 23 May 1961) was an English professional footballer who played for Manchester City between 1922 and 1928. He could play either as an inside forward or a centre forward. Early life Roberts was born in Sandbach and began his football career playing for Sandbach Villa and Sandbach Ramblers. He was transferred to Crewe Alexandra and in 1914 Bolton Wanderers paid £200 for his services. Roberts guested for West Ham United during World War I, scoring 18 goals in 19 appearances between 1917 and 1919. He also guested for Brentford. Roberts was suspended and transfer-listed by Bolton during the 1922–23 season 'for taking over one of the principal hotels in that town'. He scored 80 goals in 168 appearances for the club. Tommy Johnson (footballer Born 1900)
Thomas Clark Fisher Johnson (19 August 1901 – 28 January 1973) was an English footballer who played as either a centre forward or an inside forward. He started his professional career at Manchester City in 1919, and represented the club throughout the 1920s. Known for his powerful left foot shot, Johnson holds the record for the most goals scored by a Manchester City player in a single season, with 38 goals in 1928–29. He played for Manchester City in the 1926 FA Cup Final, and was a member of the City side which won the Second Division in 1927. Johnson signed for Everton in 1930, acting as a foil for the prolific centre-forward Dixie Dean. In four seasons at Everton, Johnson won the Second Division, the First Division and the FA Cup, before finishing his professional career with a short spell at Liverpool. Billy Meredith
William Henry Meredith (30 July 1874 – 19 April 1958) was a Welsh professional footballer. He was considered one of the early superstars of football due to his performances, notably for Manchester City and Manchester United. He won each domestic trophy in the English football league and gained 48 caps for Wales, for whom he scored 11 goals and won two British Home Championship titles. His favoured position was outside right, and his key skills were dribbling, passing, crossing and shooting. A dedicated and extremely fit professional, his habit of chewing on a toothpick during games made him instantly recognisable. Frank Booth (English Footballer)
Frank Booth (September 1882 – 22 June 1919), also known as 'Tabby', was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Stockport County, Manchester City and Bury. He played in the outside left position. He had two spells as a Manchester City player between 1902 and 1906 and in 1911. In total he made 98 appearances for the team and scored 18 goals. Billie Gillespie
William Jardine Gillespie (2 October 1873 – 1942) was a Scottish footballer who played as a centre forward; he 'hung around in the penalty circle and picked up lots of goals'. He played for Manchester City between 1897 and 1905. Career Gillespie was born in Bridgeton, Glasgow on 2 October 1873. He began his football career playing for his local team Strathclyde. In 1895 he signed for Lincoln City who were then in the Second Division of the English Football League, alongside his elder brother Matt. In 37 games for the team he scored 16 goals. Manchester City In January 1897 Gillespie signed for Manchester City who were also in the second tier of English football.
