The Hopewell Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in the U.S. state of Virginia. It begins in Bellwood, Virginia and runs southeast to its terminus in Hopewell, Virginia, a distance of . History The Hopewell Subdivision was developed in the early 1900's by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. The Hopewell Subdivision connected with the Seaboard Air Line's Main Line (Seaboard Air Line Railroad), main line (which is today the Bellwood Subdivision) in Bellwood, Virginia, Bellwood. The Hopewell Subdivision's current swing bridge over the Appomattox River was built in 1924. Bellwood is a census-designated place (CDP) in Chesterfield County, Virginia, United States. The population was 6,352 at the 2010 census. The community takes its name from from Bellwood, one of the James River Plantations. Geography Bellwood is located at (37.405598, -77.434205). Hopewell is an independent city surrounded by Prince George County and the Appomattox River in the Commonwealth of Virginia. At the 2020 census, the population was 23,033. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Hopewell with Prince George County for statistical purposes. The Seaboard Air Line Railroad , which styled itself "The Route of Courteous Service," was an American railroad which existed from April 14, 1900, until July 1, 1967, when it merged with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, its longtime rival, to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Predecessor railroads dated from the 1830s and reorganized extensively to rebuild after the American Civil War. The Seaboard Air Line Railroad’s Main Line was the backbone of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad's network in the southeastern United States. Atlantic Coast Line Railroad
The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad was a United States Class I railroad formed in 1900, though predecessor railroads had used the ACL brand since 1871. Chessie System
Chessie System, Inc. was a holding company that owned the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O), the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O), the Western Maryland Railway (WM), and Baltimore and Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad (B&OCT). Trains operated under the Chessie name from 1973 to 1987. Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, the Chessie System was the creation of Cyrus S. Eaton and his protégé Hays T. Watkins, then president and chief executive officer of the C&O. A chief source of revenue for the Chessie System was coal mined in West Virginia.
