The Honda Foursomes Tournament was a professional golf tournament played at Mere Golf Club in Mere, Cheshire Mere is a civil parish and linear village along the old course of the A556 road in the unitary authority of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, North West England, about south-west of Altrincham. Bucklow Hill is at its northea ..., England. The event was held just once, from 28 September to 2 October 1965, and had total prize money of £10,000. The event was sponsored by Honda. Over 100 pairs played in the event. All matches were over 18 holes with extra holes played in the event of a tie. The first round on 28 September reduced the field to 64 pairs. The second round was played on 29 September, the third round on 30 September, the fourth round and quarter-finals on 1 October with the semi-final and final on 2 October. Mere, Cheshire
Mere is a civil parish and linear village along the old course of the A556 road in the unitary authority of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, North West England, about south-west of Altrincham. Bucklow Hill is at its northeast end, and the Mere crossroads is at the southwest end. The village of Mere is about a mile long and has a varied stock of housing. Most houses are large and have ample gardens leading down to the lake; these are along the inner sides of a triangle formed by the A556, A50 and A5034 roads. Inside the triangle is a lake after which Mere was named, and a golf and country club. Jimmy Hitchcock (golfer)
James Hitchcock (1930 – 25 December 2015) was an English professional golfer. Hitchcock was born in Bromley. He won several major professional tournaments including the 1960 British Masters and the 1965 Agfa-Gevaert Tournament. He was selected as a member of the Great Britain and Ireland Ryder Cup team in 1965, losing all three of the matches he played. Death Hitchcock died, aged 85, on Christmas Day 2015 in Belgium where he had lived for many years. Bill Large
William Large (2 July 1937 – 15 March 2006) was an English professional golfer. He was born in Liverpool, where his father, Bill Large, Sr., was professional at the Allerton Municipal course. His father had won the Northern Professional Championship in 1928. Large's first important win was in the Honda Foursomes Tournament in 1966 where he and his partner, Jimmy Hitchcock, beat the experienced pair of Peter Alliss and Christy O'Connor Snr in the final. Peter Alliss
Peter Alliss (28 February 1931 – 5 December 2020) was an English professional golfer, television presenter, commentator, author and golf course designer. Following the death of Henry Longhurst in 1978, he was regarded by many as the "Voice of golf". In 2012 he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in the Lifetime Achievement category. Between 1952 and 1969, Alliss won 20 professional tournaments, including three British PGA Championships, in 1957, 1962 and 1965. He had five top-10 finishes in the Open Championship, coming closest in 1954 at Royal Birkdale when he finished four shots behind the champion Peter Thomson. Christy O'Connor Snr
Patrick Christopher "Christy" O'Connor (21 December 1924 – 14 May 2016) was an Irish professional golfer. He was one of the leading golfers on the British and Irish circuit from the mid-1950s. O'Connor won over 20 important British and Irish tournaments and finished in the top 10 in the Open Championship on 10 occasions. Later he had considerable success in seniors events, twice winning the World Senior Championship. In team events he played in 10 successive Ryder Cup matches and played in 15 Canada Cup/World Cup matches for Ireland, winning the Canada Cup in 1958 in partnership with Harry Bradshaw.
