Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) is the public school district that serves the Iowa City, Iowa area. Over 14,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade attend 21 elementary schools, three junior high schools, three comprehensive high schools, and one alternative school for ninth through twelfth graders. The district covers and serves the communities of Iowa City, Coralville, Hills, North Liberty, University Heights and the surrounding rural areas. The school district employs over 2,200 people. It is the fifth largest school district in the state of Iowa and the second largest employer in the Iowa City area. An open classroom is a student-centered learning space design format which first became popular in North America in the late 1960s and 1970s, with a re-emergence in the early 21st century. Theory The idea of the open classroom was that a large group of students of varying skill levels would be in a single, large classroom with several teachers overseeing them. It is ultimately derived from the one-room schoolhouse, but sometimes expanded to include more than two hundred students in a single multi-age and Educational stage, multi-grade classroom. Liberty High School is a public high school in North Liberty, Iowa, located within the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD). It opened in August 2017. Liberty is the third comprehensive high school in ICCSD and covers the entirety of North Liberty and northern Coralville. Liberty is led by Principal Justin Colbert and Assistant Principals Emily O'Donnell, Keaton Rickels, and Tunisia May. Facilities The school building, designed by SVPA Architects, Inc. in 2014, began construction in May 2015. The cost of construction was $75 million. Liberty High opened to the public on August 12, 2017. The first day of classes began on August 23, 2017. Iowa City High School
Iowa City High School is a state school, public high school in Iowa City, Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa and is part of the Iowa City Community School District. The present high school was completed as part of the Public Works Administration, Public Works Projects started by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to provide jobs. The first classes were held in the fall of 1939. The previous high school building, built in 1909, was converted to a junior high school after the new building opened. It was located where Mercy Medical Plaza now stands. The current building sits on a hill on the east side of Iowa City. The school motto is "The School that Leads." History Iowa City has had public education called "high school" at least as far back as 1858, when M.B. Henry Sabin
Henry Sabin (October 23, 1829 – March 22, 1918) was an Iowa educator. Biography Henry Sabin was born in Pomfret, Connecticut on October 23, 1829. He entered Amherst College and graduated in 1852. He was a superintendent of public schools and a member of the State Teachers' Association. As a Republican nominee, he served as the State Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1887 to 1892, and again from 1893 until his retirement in 1898. He was the father of writer Edwin L. Sabin. He died at his home in Chula Vista, California on March 22, 1918.
