Henry Cohen (politician)
Henry Isaac Cohen (21 February 1872 – 20 December 1942) was an Australian barrister and politician. Personal life Isaac Henry Cohen, always known as Henry Isaac, was born in Melbourne to financier David Cohen and Rachael Marks, both of London. On 27 June 1901 he married Ethel Mary Keon of Launceston, Tasmania. Cohen retained Jewish associations but his wife was a Catholic; their three sons and two daughters, who adopted the name Keon-Cohen, were brought up as Anglicans and attended Presbyterian schools. Education Cohen attended St James' Grammar School, the Melbourne Hebrew School and, from 1885, Scotch College where he was dux in 1888 and 1889. A student of Ormond College, University of Melbourne, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1894 and a Bachelor of Law with honours in 1895. Armadale, Victoria
Armadale is an inner suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 7 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Stonnington local government area. Armadale recorded a population of 9,368 at the 2021 census. The suburb has its own railway station, as well as Toorak railway station, which is also in Armadale. It is bordered by Glenferrie Road to the east, Orrong Road to the west, Malvern Road to the north and Dandenong Road/Princes Highway to the south. Bill Slater (politician)
William Slater (c. 20 May 1890 – 19 June 1960) was an Australian lawyer, politician and diplomat. Early life Slater is believed to have been born around 20 May 1890 to William Slater, a travelling salesman and Maria (nee O’Reilly or Reilly) in Wangaratta, Victoria. He had two siblings. After his father left his family when he was four years old, he and his two siblings were brought up by his mother in poverty in Prahran. After briefly attending Armadale State School, Slater left school early to sell newspapers outside the Alfred Hospital Melbourne, he had no shoes. Being caught and fined for nude swimming in the Yarra River led him to decide to better himself. He continued his education at Try Boys’ Society South Yarra and by reading at Prahran Free Library where he met Maurice Blackburn. Arthur Robinson (Australian Politician)
Sir Arthur Robinson KCMG (23 April 1872 – 17 May 1945) was an Australian politician, at different times a member of the upper and lower houses of the Victorian parliament and a federal MP. Early life Robinson was born at Carlton, Victoria, the son of journalist Anthony Bennett Robinson and Harriet, née Barton, the sister of Sir Edmund Barton. He attended Scotch College (where he was later Chairman of the School Council) before studying law at the University of Melbourne. He became a barrister and solicitor in 1896, partnering William Bruce in the firm that was to become Arthur Robinson & Co. (a forerunner of modern firm Allens). Robinson became known as a free trader and a conservative (in contrast to his uncle Edmund Barton), but he was also an ardent federalist. On 18 April 1899 he married Annie Summers Puckle at Malvern. Daniel McNamara
Daniel Laurence McNamara (28 March 1876 – 28 December 1947) was an Australian politician. He was born at Pomborneit to farmer Michael McNamara and Mary Taff. He worked as a produce agent in Melbourne from 1906 to 1909, and in 1907 joined the Australian Workers' Union (AWU). He was involved in founding the Rural Workers Union in 1909 and represented both unions on the Trades Hall Council. From 1909 to 1947 he served on the Labor Party state executive. On 1 May 1915 he married Florence May Spinks, with whom he had three children. He was instrumental in the merger of the Rural Workers Union with the AWU and the Queensland General Workers Union (1912–13), and served on Berwick Shire Council from 1910 to 1910 (president 1906–07). In 1916 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for Melbourne West Province, but his election was declared void two months later. He won election for Melbourne East Province in 1917.
