Daniel McNamara
Daniel Laurence McNamara (28 March 1876 – 28 December 1947) was an Australian politician. He was born at Pomborneit to farmer Michael McNamara and Mary Taff. He worked as a produce agent in Melbourne from 1906 to 1909, and in 1907 joined the Australian Workers' Union (AWU). He was involved in founding the Rural Workers Union in 1909 and represented both unions on the Trades Hall Council. From 1909 to 1947 he served on the Labor Party state executive. On 1 May 1915 he married Florence May Spinks, with whom he had three children. He was instrumental in the merger of the Rural Workers Union with the AWU and the Queensland General Workers Union (1912–13), and served on Berwick Shire Council from 1910 to 1910 (president 1906–07). In 1916 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for Melbourne West Province, but his election was declared void two months later. He won election for Melbourne East Province in 1917. Adam McLellan
Adam McLellan (10 April 1865 – 12 March 1929) was an Australian politician. He was born in Moorooduc to farmer Alexander McLellan and Margaret Jenkins. He travelled to South America in his youth, and then became a grocer in Footscray around 1892. On 27 July 1892 he married Jessie Jemima Fleming, with whom he would have six children. From around 1894 he was a smallgoods manufacturer in Richmond, and he was a founding member of the local branch of the Labour Party. In 1904 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for Melbourne East Province, one of the first two Labour members to win election to that body. He was briefly Minister of Public Works in December 1913. In 1917 he resigned from parliament and from the Labor Party over the issue of conscription. Fred Thomas (Australian Politician)
Frederick Miles Thomas (18 January 1882 – 2 June 1960) was an Australian politician. He was born in Emerald Hill to boilermaker Frederick George Thomas and Mary Ann Benfield. He was a founding member of the Timber Workers' Union in 1898 and twice served as its president; he was its federal secretary in 1919. Around 1908 he married Helena Eliza Warren, with whom he had four children. He was a member of the Victorian Socialist Party and then the Labor Party, of which he was Collingwood branch secretary. From 1919 to 1936 he was an organiser with the Clothing Trades Union, and from 1937 to 1947 worked as a dog registrar and housing inspector for Collingwood City Council. Paul Jones (Australian Politician)
Paul Jones (15 June 1878 – 27 December 1972) was an Australian politician. Born in Gaffneys Creek, Victoria, he was educated at South Melbourne College before becoming a goldminer and teacher. He also studied at the University of Melbourne for a Master of Arts degree. In 1928, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives in unusual circumstances. Jones stood for the Labor Party in Indi, and was initially a heavy underdog in this strongly conservative seat. However Country Party incumbent Robert Cook mistakenly failed to lodge his renomination papers, leaving Jones to take the seat unopposed. This is one of the few known instances in the history of the Australian Parliament that a candidate has lost his or her seat in this way. George Wales (businessman)
Sir Alexander George Wales (11 October 1885 – 31 May 1962) was an Australian businessman and politician. He was born in Richmond to contractor Alexander Wright Wales and Rosanna Poynton; his uncle Alexander Poynton was federal treasurer. He attended state school at Brunswick and studied at night school while working as a labourer on the railways. From 1903 he worked as a public service clerk and from 1907 as a secretary for the Albion Quarry Company. In 1911 he married Ethel May Bromet, with whom he had a daughter. He eventually rose to the position of managing director of the Albion Quarry Company, and also had the directorship of Alba Petroleum and Ampol. From 1914 to 1924 he served on Brunswick City Council (mayor from 1917 to 1918) and from 1925 to 1954 on Melbourne City Council (mayor from 1934 to 1937). Henry Cohen (politician)
Henry Isaac Cohen (21 February 1872 – 20 December 1942) was an Australian barrister and politician. Personal life Isaac Henry Cohen, always known as Henry Isaac, was born in Melbourne to financier David Cohen and Rachael Marks, both of London. On 27 June 1901 he married Ethel Mary Keon of Launceston, Tasmania. Cohen retained Jewish associations but his wife was a Catholic; their three sons and two daughters, who adopted the name Keon-Cohen, were brought up as Anglicans and attended Presbyterian schools. Education Cohen attended St James' Grammar School, the Melbourne Hebrew School and, from 1885, Scotch College where he was dux in 1888 and 1889. William Beckett (Australian Politician)
William James Beckett CBE (10 June 1870 – 7 May 1965) was an Australian politician. Born in the Melbourne suburb of Prahran, to Irish-born taxi proprietor Samuel Beckett and Scottish-born Margaret Cameron, he attended both state and private schools before becoming a second-hand furniture dealer at Fitzroy with his brother Henry. On 22 February 1893, he married Alice Maud Street, with whom he had two children. In 1914, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council as Labor member for Melbourne North. That year he was also elected to Fitzroy City Council, where he served until 1932 (mayor 1921–22, 1925–26). John Percy Jones
John Percy Jones (22 October 1872 – 12 October 1955) was an Australian politician. He was born in Hobart to coachman Thomas John Jones and Bridget Costello. From the age of eleven he worked on a sheep station at Mona Vale, travelling to Melbourne in 1888 as a butcher's boy. He worked as a cattle drover and brass polish salesman before starting a tailoring firm in 1893. On 22 December 1897 he married Mary Ann Worrall, with whom he had three children. From 1905 to 1907 he was founding president of the Victorian Socialist Party, and in 1910 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council as a Labor member for Melbourne East Province. James Herbert Arthur Disney (8 December 1864 – 28 July 1943) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ballarat West to carter and tailor Charles Disney and Sarah Darley. He left school at fourteen to become a boilermaker, and from around 1886 worked in Melbourne. On 22 April 1886 he married Isabella Christina Hill, with whom he had five children. He left Melbourne in 1889, finding difficulty due to his union connections. He spent time as a fruiterer and woodyard proprietor, and from around 1898 was a second-hand furniture dealer. He served on South Melbourne City Council from 1908 to 1918 and was mayor from 1915 to 1916.
