Helmut Jürgens
Helmut Jürgens (19 June 1902 – 29 August 1963) was a German scenic designer and costume designer. Life and work Born in Höxter, Westphalia, Jürgens attended high school there and in Warburg, He undertook an apprenticeship as a church and decorating painter from 1920 to 1923, followed by studying at the Kunstgewerbeschule (School of applied arts) in Kassel from 1923 to 1924 and the ''Kunstakademie Düsseldorf'' from 1924 to 1926. His first independent pieces were staged from 1926 to 1930 in Krefeld, Mönchen-Gladbach and Aachen. From 1930 to 1938, Helmut Jürgens became director of sets of the municipal theaters of Düsseldorf. From 1938 until the end of World War II, he was director of sets of the municipal theaters in Frankfurt am Main, with guest engagements in Barcelona, Budapest, Mülheim an der Ruhr and Prague. Höxter
Höxter () is a town in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany on the left bank of the river Weser, 52 km north of Kassel in the centre of the Weser Uplands. The main town's population is around 15,000, and with outlying centres, about 30,000. It is the seat of the Höxter district. Historical place names of Höxter are Hoxer and Huxaria. Warburg (; Westphalian language, Westphalian: ''Warberich'' or ''Warborg'') is a town in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia, central Germany on the river Diemel near the three-state point shared by Hessen, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. A Kunstgewerbeschule (English: ''School of Arts and Crafts'' or S''chool of Applied Arts'') was a type of vocational arts school that existed in German-speaking countries from the mid-19th century. The term Werkkunstschule was also used for these schools. From the 1920s and after World War II, most of them either merged into universities or closed, although some continued until the 1970s. Students generally started at these schools from the ages of 16 to 20 years old, although sometimes as young as 14, and undertook a four-year course, in which they were given a general education and also learnt specific arts and craft skills such as weaving, metalwork, painting, sculpting, etc. Some of the most well known artists of the period had been Kunstgewerbeschule students, including Anni Albers, Peter Behrens, René Burri, Otto Dix, Karl Duldig, Horst P. Kassel (; in Germany, spelled Cassel until 1926) is a city on the Fulda River in northern Hesse, Germany.
