Nicholson is a coastal locality in the Shire of Burke, Queensland, Australia. Geography The waters of the ''Gulf of Carpentaria'' form most of the north-eastern boundary. The '' Nicholson River'' enters from the south-west and then forms parts of the southern boundary before re-entering the locality to discharge into the ''Gulf''. Road infrastructure National Highway 1 runs along part of the southern boundary before turning north-west to run through the locality. Hells Gate Hells Gate Roadhouse (founded 1986) is a tourist stop on the Savannah Way, 80 km from Doomadgee and 50 km from the Northern Territory border, and on the Cliffdale Station cattle property. The name refers to a pass in the nearby escarpment. The Hells Gate airstrip () has one runway of length . Electoral District Of Traeger
Traeger is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. It was created in the 2017 redistribution, and was named after Alfred Traeger, inventor of the pedal-powered radio, which was a significant contribution to people living in remote and rural communities in Queensland, such as those within Traeger. It takes in most of the urbanised portions of the abolished districts of Mount Isa and Dalrymple. It includes the local government areas of Burke, Doomadgee, Carpentaria, Croydon, Etheridge, Charters Towers, Mount Isa, Cloncurry, McKinlay, Richmond and Flinders. From results of the previous 2015 election, Traeger was estimated to be a safe seat for the Katter's Australian Party with a margin of 16.1%. Savannah Way
The Savannah Way is a route of highways and major roads across the tropical savannahs of northern Australia, linking Cairns in Queensland with Broome in Western Australia. Promoted as a self-drive tourist route, it joins Cairns, Normanton, Borroloola, Katherine, Kununurra, Fitzroy Crossing, Derby and Broome. Yalarnnga (also ''Jalarnnga'', ''Jalanga'', ''Yelina'', ''Yellunga'', ''Yellanga'', ''Yalarrnnga'', ''Yalanga'' or ''Yalluna'') is an extinct Australian Aboriginal language of the Pama–Nyungan language family, that may be related to the Kalkatungu language. The Shire of Mornington is a local government area in northwestern Queensland, Australia. The shire covers the Wellesley Islands, which includes Mornington Island; the South Wellesley Islands; Bountiful Islands; and West Wellesley / Forsyth Islands groups in the Gulf of Carpentaria. History The shire includes the traditional lands of a number of Aboriginal Australian peoples. The shire was formed in 1978 when the Queensland Government decided to take control of the islands over from the Uniting Church of Australia. The local community objected, and asked the Australian federal government to help overturn this decision. Yukulta Language
The Yukulta language, also spelt Yugulda, Yokula, Yukala, Jugula, and Jakula, and also known as Ganggalidda (Kangkalita, Ganggalida), is an extinct Tangkic language spoken in Queensland and Northern Territory, Australia. It was spoken by the Yukulta people, whose traditional lands lie on the southern coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Nguburinji (Ngubirindi) is regarded as a dialect of the same language, spoken by the Nguburinji people. Classification Yukulta is a member of the Tangkic language group, along with Kayardild, Lardil and Yanggal, all from the North Wellesley Islands and adjoining mainland. Old Westmoreland Homestead
Old Westmoreland Homestead is a heritage-listed homestead at Westmoreland Station, Nicholson, Shire of Burke, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Thomas Brassey McIntosh and built in c. 1882 by Thomas Brassey McIntosh. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 31 July 2008. History Westmoreland Station, near the border with the Northern Territory and close to the Gulf of Carpentaria, was taken up in 1881 by Thomas and Robert McIntosh, Robert Philp and William Kirk. It originally comprised . Thomas Brassey McIntosh managed the property for the partners, and constructed the two-roomed stone house now known as Old Westmoreland Homestead. It is believed by many local residents to be the oldest surviving home in the district. When Westmoreland was taken up in the early 1880s, guerrilla warfare between the indigenous owners of the land and the occupying pastoralists was being waged throughout the Gulf country. Doomadgee is a town and a locality in the Aboriginal Shire of Doomadgee, Queensland, Australia. It is a mostly Indigenous community, situated about from the Northern Territory border, and west of Burketown. The settlement began with the establishment of the Doomadgee Mission in 1933, which relocated from Bayley Point to Nicholson River in 1936. In the , Doomadgee had a population of 1405 people.
