Heavyweight Wrestling
''Heavyweight Wrestling from Washington'' is the first weekly televised wrestling program that was produced by the WWE, which at the time was a regional professional wrestling promotion called Capitol Wrestling Corporation, a member of the National Wrestling Alliance. The show was hosted by Bill Malone (broadcaster), Bill Malone (1956), Morris Siegel (1956–1959) and Ray Morgan (announcer), Ray Morgan (1959–1971) and was taped at the Capital Centre (Landover, Maryland), Capitol Arena in Washington, D.C. The show debuted on January 5, 1956, and aired until September 1971 when Vincent James McMahon moved the television tapings to eastern Pennsylvania and replaced ''Heavyweight Wrestling'' with ''All Star Wrestling''. Morgan stayed with ''All Star Wrestling'' until he was replaced by McMahon's son Vincent K. McMahon. Professional Wrestling Promotion
A professional wrestling promotion is a company or business that regularly performs shows involving professional wrestling that has little relationship to the rules of the amateur olympic form. "Promotion" also describes a role which entails management, advertising and logistics of running a wrestling event (''see promoter''). Within the convention of the show, the company is a sports governing body which sanctions wrestling matches and gives authority to the championships and is responsible for maintaining the divisions and their rankings. In truth, the company serves as a touring theatre troupe, as well as event promotion body for its own events. Capitol Wrestling Corporation
Capitol Wrestling Corporation Ltd. was an American sports promotion company. It was run by Vincent J. McMahon from 1953 to 1982. Operating as the Capitol Wrestling Corporation (CWC), the company was originally a professional wrestling and boxing promotion and later became the sanctioning body for the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) and the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). The National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) is an American professional wrestling professional wrestling promotion, promotion and former professional wrestling governing body operated by its parent company Lightning One, Inc. William Malone Polglase (June 20, 1924 – March 8, 1973) was an American television and radio personality who worked for WMAL/ WMAL-TV in Washington D.C. and was the first host of ''Supermarket Sweep''. Early life Malone was born on June 20, 1924 in Brooklyn. He graduated from Brooklyn Preparatory School, where he played football, baseball, and hockey. He attended the College of the Holy Cross for one year before leaving in 1942 to join the United States Navy as a Cadet in the Naval Service Training Command. After his active duty ended, Malone remained in the United States Navy Reserve as a jet pilot. Morris Siegel
Morris Siegel (October 13, 1915 – June 2, 1994) was an American sportswriter who covered sports in Washington, D.C., from the 1940s to 1990s. Early life Siegel was born on October 13, 1915, in Atlanta. He attended Emory University, but left in 1938 after about three years of study. He got his start in the newspaper business as a copy boy and began his career as a writer with ''The Atlanta Constitution''. He later moved to the ''Richmond Times-Dispatch''. Ray Morgan (announcer)
Raymond Storrs Morgan (May 5, 1914 – January 5, 1975) was an American radio and television announcer. Early life Morgan was born on May 5, 1914 in Trenton, New Jersey to Dr. and Mrs. Walter Morgan. He grew up in Oak Park, Illinois and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1935. On June 26, 1937 he married Ruie Rideout in Englewood, New Jersey. Morgan’s father officiated the services. Prior to going into radio, Morgan worked for McGraw Hill. Career Radio Morgan began his radio career in 1939 at WPG in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He then worked at WCOP in Boston and WBAB in Atlantic City before moving to WINX in Washington D.C. in 1941. During World War II he worked for the United States Office of War Information. The Capital Centre (later USAir Arena and US Airways Arena) was an indoor arena in the eastern United States, located in Landover, Maryland, a suburb east of Washington, D.C. Opened in late 1973, it closed in 1999, and was demolished in 2002. The seating capacity was 18,756 for basketball and 18,130 for hockey. Vincent James McMahon (July 6, 1914 – May 24, 1984), sometimes referred to as Vince McMahon Sr., was an American professional wrestling promoter. All Star Wrestling (ASW) is a British professional wrestling promotion operated by Brian Dixon and based in Birkenhead, England. Founded as Wrestling Enterprises of Birkenhead in October 1970, it has also been known over the years as All Star Promotions, Big Time Wrestling, and Superslam Wrestling.
