Haydon Wick
The civil parish of Haydon Wick is a northern suburb of the town of Swindon, Wiltshire, in England. It had a population of 20,960 in the 2011 census. The parish includes the former hamlet of Haydon and the suburbs of Greenmeadow and Rodbourne Cheney. Government The first tier of local government is Haydon Wick Parish Council, with two electoral wards: Haydon End (9 councillors) and Haydon Wick (9 councillors). The council is concerned with the overall economic, cultural and physical well-being of the residents of Greenmeadow, Haydon Wick village, Haydonleigh, Abbey Meads, Haydon End, Taw Hill, Oakhurst, Woodhall Park and West Moredon. Borough Of Swindon
The Borough of Swindon is a local government authority in South West England, centred on the urban area and town of Swindon and forming part of the ceremonial county of Wiltshire. History In 1974 the Thamesdown district of Wiltshire was created from the areas of the municipal borough of Swindon (created 1900) and Highworth Rural District (created 1894). On 1 April 1997 it was made administratively independent of Wiltshire County Council, and its council became a unitary authority. The council adopted the name Swindon on 24 April 1997. Hayes Knoll Railway Station
Hayes Knoll railway station is found on the heritage Swindon and Cricklade Railway in Wiltshire, England. Hayes Knoll station was built in 1999 as part of the work to reopen the section of the former Midland and South Western Junction Railway line between Swindon and Cricklade, the entire route having been closed in 1961. It is just east of Hayes Knoll hamlet in Purton parish, about north of the rebuilt Blunsdon station and north-west of the centre of Swindon. The station has one platform, an engineering workshop and locomotive shed, at a place where the original railway trackbed includes an additional piece of land in railway ownership. It thus provides an initial destination for trains from Blunsdon, and engineering facilities required to operate the railway. There is no public access to Hayes Knoll station except by train. Mouldon Hill Country Park
Mouldon Hill Country Park is a country park to the north west of the town centre of Swindon, within the parish of Haydon Wick and close to Thamesdown Drive. It is owned and managed by Swindon Borough Council. The park is named after the small hill within it that rises from the River Ray and peaks at 105 metres above sea level. Attractions The park has a number of paths and walkways together with a hidden lake. A section of the North Wilts Canal flows through the park and has been restored by the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust. The River Ray passes through the park, and is home to many species of fish and wildlife. There is a 2.1m height restriction entering the park and as of 03/07/20 no gate has been put in. Anacamptis Morio
''Anacamptis morio'', the green-winged orchid or green-veined orchid (synonym ''Orchis morio''), is a flowering plant of the orchid family, Orchidaceae. It usually has purple flowers, and is found in Europe and the Middle East. Description It flowers from late April to June in the British Isles, and as early as February in other countries, such as France. The inflorescence is of various colours, mainly purple but ranging from white, through pink, to deep purple. From 5 to 25 helmet-shaped flowers grow in a loose, linear bunch at the top of the single stalk. A pair of lateral sepals with prominent green, occasionally purple veins extend laterally like "wings", giving the orchid its name. The broad, three lobed, lower petal is pale in the center with dark spots. River Ray, Wiltshire
The River Ray is a tributary of the River Thames in England which flows through Wiltshire. The river rises at Wroughton to the south of Swindon and runs in a generally northern direction, passing to the west of the town via Shaw. Near Roughmoor it is joined from the west by the Lydiard Brook. The river joins the Thames on the southern bank near Calcutt, east of Cricklade, just upstream of Water Eaton House Bridge. Its length is about from its source to the Lydiard Brook, and from there to the Thames. The river has been subject to a restoration project run by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. The final stage, completed in December 2007, was to build a tunnel near the Great Western Way at Rivermead to allow the nine species of fish to travel the length of the river without obstruction. Swindon's Bus Company (formerly Thamesdown Transport) is a bus operator in England, serving Swindon and the surrounding area. Previously owned by Swindon Borough Council, in February 2017 ownership passed to the Go-Ahead Group and the operation was rebranded as "Thamesdown...Swindon's bus company", later simply "Swindon's bus company". History Thamesdown Transport had its origins in 1904, when Swindon Corporation started to operate electric trams. Bus operation started in 1927, and two years later all the trams were replaced. Taw Valley Halt Railway Station
Taw Valley Halt railway station is the current (and temporary) southern terminus of the Swindon and Cricklade Railway, a heritage railway line in Wiltshire, South-West England. Blunsdon Railway Station
Blunsdon railway station is a former railway station, now operating as a heritage railway station. It was built to serve the village of Blunsdon, north of Swindon in Wiltshire, England, although located within the boundaries of Purton. History Blunsdon was one of the last stations to be opened by the Midland and South Western Junction Railway in 1895 on a railway that had opened in 1883. It was little more than a single-platform halt, and milk was the main traffic. It also had a single siding, used for such traffic as fertiliser and other agricultural requirements. It was also one of the first stations on the route to be closed. Regular passenger trains stopped calling in 1922, leaving one solitary passenger train service stopping at Blunsdon on a Sunday until 1924. The station closed completely on 1 August 1937 when goods traffic ceased.
