Havant Academy
Havant Academy is a mixed secondary school located in the Leigh Park area of Havant in the English county of Hampshire. The school is situated at the edge of Staunton Country Park. Previously known as Wakeford Comprehensive School, it gained specialist Sports College status and was renamed Staunton Community Sports College. It then became a foundation school administered by Hampshire County Council. The school converted to academy status on 1 September 2010 and was renamed Havant Academy, becoming the first academy in Hampshire. It is sponsored by the Kemnal Academies Trust. Havant Academy was rated 'good' in most aspects in its Ofsted report of June 2015. In previous Ofsted reports Havant Academy had been found unsatisfactory; in 2013 Ofsted stated that "The academy is making reasonable progress towards the removal of special measures." Academy (English School)
An academy school in England is a state-funded school which is directly funded by the Department for Education and independent of local authority control. The terms of the arrangements are set out in individual Academy Funding Agreements. Most academies are secondary schools, though slightly more than 25% of primary schools (4,363 as of December 2017) are academies. Academies are self-governing non-profit charitable trusts and may receive additional support from personal or corporate sponsors, either financially or in kind. Academies are inspected and follow the same rules on admissions, special educational needs and exclusions as other state schools and students sit the same national exams. Foundation School
In England and Wales, a foundation school is a state-funded school in which the governing body has greater freedom in the running of the school than in community schools. Foundation schools were set up under the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 to replace grant-maintained schools, which were funded directly by central government. Grant-maintained schools that had previously been voluntary controlled or county schools (but not voluntary aided) usually became foundation schools. Foundation schools are a kind of "maintained school", meaning that they are funded by central government via the local education authority, and do not charge fees to students. As with voluntary controlled schools, all capital and running costs are met by the government. Bob Kirby-Harris (born 12 June 1952) is a former Secretary General of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics and Chief Executive of the Institute of Physics. Early life He went to Ashford Grammar School (now The Norton Knatchbull School). He gained a 1st Class BSc in Theoretical Physics in 1973 from the University of Kent. Graham Stokes (music Executive)
Graham Barry Stokes, 9 February 1958, Birmingham, West Midlands, England) is a British music executive and musician. He grew up in Leigh Park, Hampshire, attending Wakeford Comprehensive (now known as Havant Academy). He spent his early life playing in various bands as a guitarist, before landing a job at Arista Records as a post boy in 1979. Business And Technology Education Council
The Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) is a provider of secondary school leaving qualifications and further education qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Whilst the T in BTEC previously stood for Technical, according to the DFE (2016) it now stands for Technology. BTECs originated in 1984 and were awarded by Edexcel from 1996. Their origins lie in the Business Education Council, formed in 1974 to "rationalise and improve the relevance of sub-degree vocational education". It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pearson plc. BTEC qualifications, especially Level 3, are accepted by all UK universities (in many instances combined with other qualifications such as A Levels) when assessing the suitability of applicants for admission, and many such universities base their conditional admissions offers on a student's predicted BTEC grades. Sports Colleges are senior secondary schools which promote sports alongside secondary education. United Kingdom Sports Colleges were introduced in 1997 as part of the Specialist schools programme, Specialist Schools Programme in the United Kingdom. The programme enabled Secondary education#England, Wales and Northern Ireland, secondary schools to Specialist school, specialise in certain fields, in this case, Physical education, PE, sports and dance. Schools that successfully applied to the Specialist Schools Trust and became Sports Colleges received extra funding from this joint private sector and government scheme. Leigh Park
Leigh Park is a large suburb (population 27,500) of Havant, in Hampshire, England. It currently forms the bulk or whole of four electoral wards: Battins, Bondfields, Barncroft and Warren Park (generally referred to as 'The Warren'). Staunton Country Park lies on the northern edge of Leigh Park, also within the Havant boundary. Staunton Country Park
Staunton Country Park is a listed Regency era, Regency landscaped parkland and forest encompassing approximately in Hampshire, England. An ornamental farm, ornamental lake, Folly, follies, maze, walled garden and greenhouse, glasshouses can be found within it. Entry to the parkland itself is free, however there is an associated visitor centre, with animals and attractions, which is not free. It is situated between Leigh Park and Rowlands Castle, near Havant. History The first gardens on the site were begun by William Garrett who purchased the land in 1802. In 1817 the park was sold to John Julius Angerstein but in 1819 the sale was reversed after Angerstein brought a case against Garrett over non disclosure of dry rot.
