Harry Newbould
Henry J. Newbould (1861 – April 1928, born in Liverpool, Lancashire) was an English football player and manager who managed Derby County and Manchester City. Before becoming a manager, Newbould combined a job at an iron foundry with playing football, p237 playing as an outside right. p148 Derby St. Luke and Sheffield Wednesday were among his clubs. He later trained as an accountant. In 1900 he became the first person to hold the position of manager at Derby County, stepping up from his previous position as assistant secretary. Prior to his appointment, the Derby team was selected by committee. Newbould's Derby reached the FA Cup final in 1903, but lost 6–0 to Bury at Crystal Palace. In 1906, financial pressures led Derby's directors to sell England international Steve Bloomer to Middlesbrough. The Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) is the trade union for professional association footballers in England and Wales. Founded in 1907, it is the world's oldest professional sport trade union, and has over 5,000 members. The aims of the PFA are to protect, improve and negotiate the conditions, rights and status of all professional players by collective bargaining agreements. In sports leagues, promotion and relegation is a process where teams are transferred between multiple divisions based on their performance for the completed season. Leagues that use promotion and relegation systems are often called open leagues. In a system of promotion and relegation, the best-ranked team(s) in the lower division are ''promoted'' to the higher division for the next season, and the worst-ranked team(s) in the higher division are ''relegated'' to the lower division for the next season. In some leagues, playoffs or qualifying rounds are also used to determine rankings. 1908–09 In English Football
The 1908–09 season was the 38th season of competitive football in England. Overview Tottenham Hotspur played their first ever season in the Football League, gaining promotion to the First Division in the process. Spurs, along with Bradford Park Avenue entered the Second Division to replace Lincoln City and Stoke. This year started a new competition: the Charity Shield; a match between the champion of the Professional League vs. the champion of the Amateur League. The first championship went to Manchester United, in a replayed final against Queens Park Rangers. Events *5 December 1908 - Sunderland defeat Newcastle United 9-1, after the game was tied 1-1 at half-time. This is the joint biggest away victory in the top division in Football League history.
