Harry Harley
Harry Cruickshank Harley (4 June 1926 – 27 September 2014) was a Canadian politician who served as Liberal party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was a physician by career. Political career Harley was first elected at the Halton riding in the 1962 general election, narrowly defeating the incumbent Charles Alexander Best in a result where the armed services vote swung over to the Liberals. He was subsequently re-elected in 1963 and 1965. After completing his term in the 27th Canadian Parliament in 1968, Harley left federal politics and did not seek further re-election. Halton (electoral District)
Halton was a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada, represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1988 before being abolished in an electoral district redistribution, and again from 1997 to 2015, when it was again abolished in another electoral district redistribution. When it was last contested in 2011, its population was 203,437, of whom 115,255 were eligible electors. The 1965 Canadian federal election was held on November 8, 1965 to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 27th Parliament of Canada. The Liberal Party of Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson was re-elected with a larger number of seats in the House. Although the Liberals lost a small share of the popular vote, they were able to win more seats, falling just short of a majority. Overview The Liberals campaigned on their record of having kept the promises made in the 1963 campaign, which included job creation, lowering income taxes, higher wages, higher family allowances and student loans. The 27th Canadian Parliament was in session from December 9, 1965 until April 23, 1968. The membership was set by the 1965 federal election on November 8, 1965, and it changed only somewhat due to resignations and by-elections until it was dissolved prior to the 1968 election. It was controlled by a Liberal Party minority under Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson and the 19th Canadian Ministry. Pierre Trudeau succeeded Pearson as party leader and Prime Minister shortly before this Parliament ended for the 1968 national election. 1962 Canadian Federal Election
The 1962 Canadian federal election was held on June 18, 1962, to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 25th Parliament of Canada. The governing Progressive Conservative (PC) Party won a plurality of seats in this election, and its majority government was reduced to a minority government. When the election was called, PC Prime Minister John Diefenbaker had governed for four years with the then-largest majority in the House of Commons in Canadian history. This election reduced the PCs to a tenuous minority government as a result of economic difficulties such as high unemployment and a slumping Canadian dollar, as well as unpopular decisions such as the cancellation of the Avro Arrow. The House of Commons of Canada (french: Chambre des communes du Canada) is the lower house of the Parliament of Canada.
