Harry Davis (potter)
Harry Clemens Davis (20 November 1910 – 7 July 1986) was a Welsh-born New Zealand potter, and husband of May Davis. Biography Davis was born in Cardiff, Wales in 1910, the only child of a Swiss mother and English father. He was educated in Switzerland and England, and was fluent in German. After school he was sent to the Bournemouth School of Art where the pottery class was oversubscribed. Undaunted, he worked in the pottery room after hours, turning out large numbers of enormous pots which drew the attention of the headmaster. He was sent to Broadstone Potters, near Poole, which had been established in 1928 by Lancelot Cayley Shadwell and Mary Longbottom. Initially, he worked as a decorator, responsible for the ''"Joyous Pottery"'' range, but soon showed interest in all aspects of the craft. May Davis
May Beatrice Davis (née Scott, 30 March 1914 – 13 January 1995) was an English-New Zealand Pottery, potter. Biography Born in Manchester, Lancashire, England in 1914, Davis studied at Salford Art School and was taught basic pottery skills by Muriel Lanchester (puppeteer), Muriel Bell. In 1936 she began working at Leach Pottery in Cornwall under David Leach (potter), David Leach, where she met Harry Davis (potter), Harry Davis. They married in London in 1938, and she joined him in Ghana, where he was employed by Crown Agents for Oversea Governments and Administrations Ltd, Crown Agents for the Colonies as Head of Art at Achimota School, Achimota College, Accra. In 1946, they established the Crowan Pottery in Cornwall. They moved to Nelson, New Zealand, Nelson, New Zealand, in 1962 and set up the Crewenna Pottery in nearby Wakapuaka.
