Harish Gaonkar
Harish (Honnayya) S. Gaonkar (born 1946) is an Indian specialist on butterflies who contributed to the Zoological Museum at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark and wrote a 1996 compilation of butterflies of Western Ghats, South India cataloguing 330 species. Gaonkar was born in Karwar district, India. Gaonkar earned his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. Born and raised in Hanehalli, Gaonkar completed his high school from Anandashram High School, Bankikodla in 1962 . In 2001 Gaonkar was a scientific associate of the Natural History Museum in London. In the 2004 "Global Butterfly Names" proposal to the ECAT programme of GBIF submitted by J. Butterflies are insects in the macrolepidopteran clade Rhopalocera from the Order (biology), order Lepidoptera, which also includes moths. Adult butterflies have large, often brightly coloured wings, and conspicuous, fluttering flight. The group comprises the large superfamily (zoology), superfamily Papilionoidea, which contains at least one former group, the skippers (formerly the superfamily "Hesperioidea"), and the most recent analyses suggest it also contains the moth-butterflies (formerly the superfamily "Hedyloidea"). ''Pieris rapae'' is a small- to medium-sized butterfly species of the whites-and-yellows family Pieridae. It is known in Europe as the small white, in North America as the cabbage white or cabbage butterfly, on several continents as the small cabbage white, and in New Zealand as the white butterfly. The butterfly is recognizable by its white color with small black dots on its wings, and it can be distinguished from '' P. brassicae'' by its larger size and the black band at the tip of its forewings. ''Papilio liomedon'', the Malabar banded swallowtail, is a member of the swallowtail butterfly family found in southern India. Earlier considered a subspecies of the banded swallowtail (''Papilio demolion'') of southeast Asia, it is now considered a distinct species. Description It is similar to ''Papilio demolion'' but distinguishable chiefly by the pale greenish-yellow band that crosses the wings starting from the middle and not from just before the middle of the dorsal margin of the hindwing, also this band is composed entirely of separate spots on the forewing. Lycaenidae is the second-largest family of butterflies (behind Nymphalidae, brush-footed butterflies), with over 6,000 species worldwide, whose members are also called gossamer-winged butterflies.
