Hans Stieber Prize
The Hans Stieber Prize is a promotional prize for composers of serious and light music, which is awarded by the fiduciary trust ''Hans Stieber Foundation'' of the ''Landesverband Sachsen-Anhalt '' based in Halle (Saale). The name giver and dedicatee is Hans Stieber (1886–1969), composer and founding director of the . It was donated after Stieber's death by his widow Gretl Stieber in 1977 from his inheritance and awarded annually until 1989 to mainly young composers of the GDR. After the Peaceful Revolution, Stieber's heirs asserted a replevin regarding the foundation's assets, which meant that the award had to be suspended for the time being. Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten (DNN) is a regional newspaper that appears in the city of Dresden and its surroundings. It is the third largest newspaper in the region after the ''Sächsische Zeitung'' and the ''Dresdner Morgenpost''. ''Neues Deutschland'' (''nd''; en, New Germany, sometimes stylized in lowercase letters) is a left-wing German daily newspaper, headquartered in Berlin. For 43 years it was the official party newspaper of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED), which governed East Germany (officially known as the German Democratic Republic), and as such served as one of the party's most important organs. Thomas Hertel
Thomas Hertel (born 1951) is a German composer. Life Hertel was born in Bad Salzungen, Thuringia. After his Abitur in the special branch for music in Wernigerode, Hertel studied musicology in Halle from 1969 to 1973. Afterwards he was a master student for composition at the Academy of Arts, Berlin with Siegfried Matthus. From 1974 to 1982, he was head of incidental music at the Staatsschauspiel Dresden and worked as a freelance composer and head of the Young Composers Section in the Dresden Composers' Association (commissioned operas ''Leonce and Lena'' and ''Till''). He received composition prizes in Halle and the Hans Stieber Prize of the Radio of the GDR. Reinhard Pfundt
Reinhard Pfundt (born in 1951) is a German pianist, composer and academic teacher at the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig. He wrote orchestral works, chamber music and songs, and was awarded prizes in the German Democratic Republic (DDR). Life Born in Burgstädt, Pfundt grew up with weekly singing and lessons in piano and organ. He received first composition lessons from 1967 to 1969 with Paul Kurzbach in Chemnitz (then Karl-Marx-Stadt). From 1969 to 1975, he studied composition and piano at the Musikhochschule Leipzig, among others with Fritz Geißler, Rolf Reuter, Siegfried Thiele and Wilhelm Weismann. Wilfried Krätzschmar (born 23 March 1944) is a German composer. Life Born in Dresden, Krätzschmar received piano lessons from 1952. After his Abitur at the he studied composition with Johannes Paul Thilman from 1962 to 1968, piano with Wolfgang Plehn and conducting with Klaus Zoephel at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber Dresden. Gerd Domhardt
Gerd Domhardt (19 February 1945 in Wolmirstedt – 18 February 1997 in Halle) was a German composer. Domhardt grew up in Schleusingerneundorf. He studied music education, German studies and musicology at the University of Halle-Wittenberg from 1963 to 1968. From 1973 to 1976 he was a master student for composition with Ruth Zechlin at the Academy of the Arts, Berlin. Until 1969 he worked at the Staatskapelle Halle under Olaf Koch. Manfred Weiss (composer)
Manfred Weiss (12 February 1935 – 25 April 2023) was a German composer especially of symphonies, concertos and vocal music, based in Dresden. He taught composition and music theory at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber from 1959, as professor from 1983 to 1997, influencing generations of composers, and instrumental in the restructuring of the music department after the German reunification. Life Weiss was born in Niesky, Upper Lusatia. He grew up in a missionary family of the Herrnhut Brethren Community. He received violin lessons in Niesky and piano lessons in Görlitz in childhood.
