Halfway Run Natural Area
Halfway Run Natural Area is a protected area in Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of Bald Eagle State Forest, and is a short distance from R.B. Winter State Park. Description The area protects a glaciated landscape of a type uncommon for Central Pennsylvania, along both banks of Halfway Run, which has been designated as a stream of unimpaired quality. The area is known for numerous pingo scars from the age of glaciation, in the form of ponds filling pits that formed when small ice-covered hills collapsed. Rebersburg is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States. Rebersburg is part of the State College, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The official town Mayor is Mr. Matthew S. Dunlap(Republican). The mayor was instrumental in securing funds for the purchase of Engine-Rescue 19 as well as funding for the purchase of a new road maintenance truck. Bald Eagle State Forest is a Pennsylvania state forest in Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry District #7. The main office is located in Laurelton in Union County, Pennsylvania. The forest is found in Centre, Clinton, Mifflin, Snyder, and Union Counties. Bald Eagle shares a common border on its western extent with Rothrock State Forest and on its northern extent with Tiadaghton State Forest. Halfway Run
Halfway Run is a tributary of Rapid Run in Union County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is approximately long and flows through Hartley Township. The watershed of the stream has an area of . A number of waterlogged pingo scars occur near the stream. The lake is in the vicinity of the Halfway Run Natural Area and R.B. Winter State Park. Numerous tree species inhabit the land near the stream. Course Halfway Run begins in a valley in Hartley Township, near the border between that township and Lewis Township. It flows in a generally west-southwesterly direction alongside Bake Oven Mountain for virtually its entire length, receiving an unnamed tributary flowing from a spring called Boiling Spring. Pingos are intrapermafrost ice-cored hills, high and in diameter. They are typically conical in shape and grow and persist only in permafrost environments, such as the Arctic and subarctic. A pingo is a periglacial landform, which is defined as a non-glacial landform or process linked to colder climates. It is estimated that there are more than 11,000 pingos on Earth. The Tuktoyaktuk peninsula area has the greatest concentration of pingos in the world with a total of 1,350 pingos. There is currently remarkably limited data on pingos. Vernal pools, also called vernal ponds or ephemeral pools, are seasonal pools of water that provide habitat for distinctive plants and animals. They are considered to be a distinctive type of wetland usually devoid of fish, and thus allow the safe development of natal amphibian and insect species unable to withstand competition or predation by fish.
