Halfdan Grieg
Halfdan Grieg (17 December 1907 – 6 February 1971) was a Norwegian shipowner. He was born in Bergen as a son of ship-owner Halfdan Grieg, Sr. (1864–1940) and Ragna, née Geelmuyden (1868–1947). He examen artium, finished his secondary education in 1926 and took mercantile education at Columbia University in 1926–27. After shipping experience in the United States, England and Germany he worked in the shipping firm ''Joachim Grieg & Co.'' from 1932 and became a partner in 1937. During the occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany he was imprisoned in Bergen in June–July 1942. After the war he became involved in the fledgling commercial aviation industry in Norway, as chairman of the board of West Norway Airlines. He died in 1971. Bergen (), historically Bjørgvin, is a city and municipality in Vestland county on the west coast of Norway. , its population is roughly 285,900. Bergen is the second-largest city in Norway. Examen artium was the name of the academic certification conferred in Denmark and Norway, qualifying the student for admission to university studies. Examen artium was originally introduced as the entrance exam of the University of Copenhagen in 1630. The University of Copenhagen was the only university of Denmark-Norway until The Royal Frederick University in Christiania was founded in 1811. ''Merkantilt biografisk leksikon: hvem er hvem i næringslivet?'' ( en, Mercantile Biographical Encyclopedia: Who is Who in the Enterprise?) was a Norwegian-language encyclopedia published by Yrkesforlaget in 1935. It featured approximately 10,000 short biographical entries for Norwegian businesspeople, and was edited by Einar Hoffstad (1894–1959). It was printed by Grøndahl & Søns Boktrykkeri. The purpose of the encyclopedia was to "remedy the need to know something about the individuals one is trading with". The entries contain little genealogical information, and the parents of the portrayed businesspeople are not included. Abbreviations are used extensively to save space and money. The editor, Einar Hoffstad, stated in the foreword of the encyclopedia that it was not a parallel to the '' Who's Who'' reference works, although the title could imply that. The occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany during the Second World War began on 9 April 1940 after Operation Weserübung. Conventional armed resistance to the German invasion ended on 10 June 1940, and Nazi Germany controlled Norway until the capitulation of German forces in Europe on 8 May 1945. Throughout this period, a pro-German government named Den nasjonale regjering (English: the National Government) ruled Norway, while the Norwegian king Haakon VII and the prewar government escaped to London, where they formed a government in exile. West Norway Airlines
Vestlandske Luftfartsselskap A/S, trading internationally as West Norway Airlines, was an airline based in Bergen, Norway, which operated from 1946 to 1957. The company operated almost entirely a fleet of seaplanes out of its base at Bergen Airport, Sandviken. From 1951 it operated scheduled services along the West Coast as summer-only services. The airline started off as a general aviation operator, mostly operating Republic RC-3 Seabees.
