HMS Tickler (1794)
HMS ''Tickler'' was launched in 1794 as a ''Conquest''-class gunbrig. She was sold in 1802. Career Lieutenant James Gomm commissioned ''Teazer'' in February 1795. She then joined Sir Sidney Smith's squadron. In July Lieutenant Gomm, Lieutenant Titus Allardyce of and Lieutenant Henry Hicks of faced mutinous conduct by seamen at the ÃŽles Saint-Marcouf. This escalated into a situation that involved counter-charges and the confinement of Hicks, Allardyce, and Gomm. Smith was dissatisfied with the officers' conduct but would later write that he had treated the officers with great leniency. Lieutenant John Johnson recommissioned ''Tickler'' in August 1797. Lieutenant Thomas Williams commanded ''Tickler'' from August 1797. Between March and June 1798 ''Tickler'' was at Portsmouth undergoing coppering and conversion to a brig. Builder's Old Measurement
Builder's Old Measurement (BOM, bm, OM, and o.m.) is the method used in England from approximately 1650 to 1849 for calculating the cargo capacity of a ship. It is a volumetric measurement of cubic capacity. It estimated the tonnage of a ship based on length and maximum beam (nautical), beam. It is expressed in "tons burden" ( en-em , burthen , enm , byrthen ), and abbreviated "tons bm". The formula is: : \text = \frac where: * ''Length'' is the length, in foot (length), feet, from the stem (ship), stem to the sternpost; * ''Beam (nautical), Beam'' is the maximum beam, in feet. Carronades
A carronade is a short, smoothbore, cast-iron cannon which was used by the Royal Navy. It was first produced by the Carron Company, an ironworks in Falkirk, Scotland, and was used from the mid-18th century to the mid-19th century. Its main function was to serve as a powerful, short-range, anti-ship and anti-crew weapon. The technology behind the carronade was greater dimensional precision, with the shot fitting more closely in the barrel thus transmitting more of the propellant charge's energy to the projectile, allowing a lighter gun using less gunpowder to be effective. Chase Gun
A chase gun (or chaser), usually distinguished as bow chaser and stern chaser, was a cannon mounted in the bow (aiming forward) or stern (aiming backward) of a sailing ship. They were used to attempt to slow down an enemy ship either chasing (pursuing) or being chased, when the ship's broadside could not be brought to bear. Typically, the chasers were used to attempt to damage the rigging and thereby cause the target to lose performance. Bow chasers could be regular guns brought up from the gundeck and aimed through specially cut-out ports on either side of the bowsprit, or dedicated weapons made with an unusually long bore and a relatively light ball, and mounted in the bow. A gun-brig was a small brig-rigged warship that enjoyed popularity in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, during which large numbers were purchased or built. In general these were vessels of under 200 tons burthen, and thus smaller than the more common s or the even larger s. Admiral Sir William Sidney Smith (21 June 176426 May 1840) was a British naval and intelligence officer.
