HMNZS Waikato (F-55)
HMNZS ''Waikato'' (F55) was a ''Leander'' Batch 2TA frigate of the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN). She was one of two ''Leander''s built for the RNZN, the other being the Batch 3 . These two New Zealand ships relieved British ships of the Armilla patrol during the Falklands conflict, freeing British ships for deployment. Construction and design ''Waikato'' was ordered in 1963 for the RNZN after a delay of more than six years after the order for the Type 12 frigates ''Otago'' and ''Taranaki'', which had proved successful in New Zealand service. There was a pressing need to replace the ageing cruiser and the RNZN's last two operational s, which carried outdated sonars and anti-submarine weapons and were slow. The Navy board view was that a minimum of six frigates were required for protection of trade including strategic oil shipments to New Zealand, and the improved anti submarine Type 12 was considered 'eminently suited' for New Zealand conditions. Additionally, Cold War tensio ...

Royal New Zealand Navy
The Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN; mi, Te Taua Moana o Aotearoa, , Sea Warriors of New Zealand) is the maritime arm of the New Zealand Defence Force. The fleet currently consists of nine ships. The Navy had its origins in the Naval Defence Act 1913, and the subsequent purchase of the cruiser , which by 1921 had been moored in Auckland as a training ship. A slow buildup occurred during the Interwar period, and then perhaps the infant Navy's finest hour occurred soon after the beginning of World War II when fought alongside two other Royal Navy cruisers at the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939. History Pre–World War I The first recorded maritime combat activity in New Zealand occurred when Māori in war waka attacked Dutch explorer Abel Tasman off the northern tip of the South Island in December 1642. The New Zealand Navy did not exist as a separate military force until 1941. The association of the Royal Navy with New Zealand began with the arrival of Lieutenant ...

Displacement (ship)
The displacement or displacement tonnage of a ship is its weight. As the term indicates, it is measured indirectly, using Archimedes' principle, by first calculating the volume of water displaced by the ship, then converting that value into weight. Traditionally, various measurement rules have been in use, giving various measures in long tons. Today, tonnes are more commonly used. Ship displacement varies by a vessel's degree of load, from its empty weight as designed (known as "lightweight tonnage") to its maximum load. Numerous specific terms are used to describe varying levels of load and trim, detailed below. Ship displacement should not be confused with measurements of volume or capacity typically used for commercial vessels and measured by tonnage: net tonnage and gross tonnage. Calculation The process of determining a vessel's displacement begins with measuring its draft.George, 2005. p.5. This is accomplished by means of its "draft marks" (or "load lines"). A mer ...

Pearl Harbor
Pearl Harbor is an American lagoon harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, west of Honolulu. It was often visited by the Naval fleet of the United States, before it was acquired from the Hawaiian Kingdom by the U.S. with the signing of the Reciprocity Treaty of 1875. Much of the harbor and surrounding lands are now a United States Navy deep-water naval base. It is also the headquarters of the United States Pacific Fleet. The U.S. government first obtained exclusive use of the inlet and the right to maintain a repair and coaling station for ships here in 1887. The surprise attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy on December 7, 1941, led the United States to declare war on the Empire of Japan, making the attack on Pearl Harbor the immediate cause of the United States' entry into World War II. History Pearl Harbor was originally an extensive shallow embayment called ''Wai Momi'' (meaning, “Waters of Pearl”) or ''Puuloa'' (meaning, “long hill”) by the Hawaiians. Puuloa was r ...

HMS Yarmouth (F101)
HMS ''Yarmouth'' was the first modified Type 12 frigate of the ''Rothesay'' class to enter service with the Royal Navy. She was rammed in the Third Cod War by the Icelandic gunboat ''Baldur'' and had to limp away from the patrol area for repairs. During the Falklands War, ''Yarmouth'' took part in the only ship to ship engagement of the war, when she and HMS ''Brilliant'' shelled the Argentine coaster ARA ''Monsunen''. In the last action of the conflict, ''Yarmouth'' and HMS ''Endurance'' recaptured the South Sandwich Islands. Design The ''Rothesay''-class was an improved version of the ''Whitby''-class anti-submarine frigate, with nine ''Rothesay''s ordered in the 1954–55 shipbuilding programme for the Royal Navy to supplement the six ''Whitby''s. ''Yarmouth'' was long overall and between perpendiculars, with a beam of and a draught of . The ''Rothesay''s were powered by the same Y-100 machinery used by the ''Whitby''-class. ARA San Luis (S-32)
ARA ''San Luis'' (S-32) was a Type 209 diesel-powered submarine of the Argentine Navy. Built in Germany, ''San Luis'' has a displacement of and was commissioned in 1974. The submarine operated against the Royal Navy during the Falklands War without any noticeable success, but survived a number of anti-submarine sweeps carried out by British frigates. ''San Luis'' was struck in 1997 after an incomplete overhaul. Design History ''San Luis'' is best known for serving in the Falklands War ( es, Guerra de las Malvinas/Guerra del Atlántico Sur) of 1982. Only one other submarine, the Second World War-era , was operational at this time. After ''Santa Fe'' was damaged, captured and scuttled by the British during the re-taking of South Georgia on 28 April, and the nuclear submarine had sunk the cruiser on 2 May, the Argentine fleet retired to port for the duration of the war, with the exception of ''San Luis'', making her the only Argentine naval presence facing the British fl ...
