H. S. Doreswamy
Harohalli Srinivasaiah Doreswamy (10 April 1918 – 26 May 2021) was an Indian journalist and activist. He was a member of the Indian independence movement, and became a centenarian in April 2018. He ran the publication house of ''Sahitya Mandira'' and the Indian nationalist newspaper ''Pauravani'' during the British Raj and the period afterwards. The historian Ramachandra Guha describes him as the "conscience of the state ( Karnataka)" due to his activism. Early life and education Doreswamy was born in the village of Harohalli, in the erstwhile Kingdom of Mysore, a princely state of the British Indian Empire. He was raised by his grandfather Shamanna after his parents died when he was five years old. He had an elder brother Seetharam who would later become the mayor of Bangalore in independent India. French cemetery There is a French cemetery in Harohalli, where the French who came to aid Tipu Sultan in the Anglo-Mysore Wars are buried. The land for the French cemetery was granted by the sultan. The interned French soldiers and family members mostly died from malaria, fatigue or in battle. The cemetery, more than 250 years old, has fallen into neglect and vandalism. Only 35 graves remain. Binny and Co is a shipping, textile, banking and insurance firm based in the city of Chennai, India. It is one of the oldest business firms in Chennai city. History Binny and Co was founded in Madras by John Binny as a general, clearing and forwarding agency in 1797. Mysore State
Mysore State, colloquially Old Mysore, was a state within the Dominion of India and the later Republic of India from 1947 until 1956. The state was formed by renaming the Kingdom of Mysore, and Bangalore replaced Mysore as the state's capital. The Quit India Movement, also known as the August Kranti Movement, was a movement launched at the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee by Mahatma Gandhi on 8th August 1942, during World War II, demanding an end to British rule in India. After the failure of the Cripps Mission to secure Indian support for the British war effort, Gandhi made a call to ''Do or Die'' in his Quit India movement delivered in Bombay on 8 August 1942 at the Gowalia Tank Maidan. The All India Congress Committee launched a mass protest demanding what Gandhi called "An Orderly British Withdrawal" from India. Even though it was at war, the British were prepared to act.
