Granai (Pashto/Dari: گرانای ''Grānāy'') is a village located in Bala Buluk District, Farah Province, Afghanistan. Granai Airstrike
The Granai airstrike, sometimes called the Granai massacre, refers to the killing of approximately 86 to 147 Afghan civilians by an airstrike by a US Air Force B-1 Bomber on May 4, 2009, in the village of Granai (, also Romanized ''Garani'', ''Gerani'', ''Granay'') in Farah Province, south of Herat, Afghanistan. The United States admitted significant errors were made in carrying out the airstrike, stating "the inability to discern the presence of civilians and avoid and/or minimize accompanying collateral damage resulted in the unintended consequence of civilian casualties". The Afghan government has said that around 140 civilians were killed, of whom 22 were adult males and 93 were children. Afghanistan's top rights body has said 97 civilians were killed, most of them children. Other estimates range from 86 to 147 civilians killed. Farah Province
Farah (Dari: , ''Farā'') is one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan, located in the southwestern part of the country next to Iran. It is a spacious and sparsely populated province, divided into eleven districts and contains hundreds of villages. It has a population of about 563,026, which is multi-ethnic and mostly a rural tribal society. Farah's population is dominated by Pashtun (80%) tribesmen (Alizai, Barakzai,Noorzai) although Tajiks and a small minority of Shi'a Hazaras can also be found in the countryside. Bala Buluk District
Bala Buluk is a district in Farah Province, Afghanistan. Its population, which is approximately 95% Pashtun and 5% Tajik, was estimated at 100,429 in December 2004. 2009 US airstrike In May 2009, an American airstrike in the village of Granai in Bala Buluk District occurred that killed many civilians. American authorities investigated the incident. According to ''The New York Times'', the villagers say that 147 were killed, an independent Afghan human rights group says 117 were killed, but the American authorities are skeptical that even 100 were killed. As with all American airstrikes in Afghanistan at the time, it was intended against the Taliban. However, in this instance villagers say that the Taliban had left by the time the airstrike occurred. Pashto Language
Pashto (,; , ) is an Eastern Iranian language in the Indo-European language family. It is known in historical Persian literature as Afghani ().
