George Adam Nixon
George Adam Nixon (May 8, 1923 – September 19, 1998) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1971 to 1975 who represented the downtown Toronto riding of Dovercourt. Background Nixon was born and raised in the Dovercourt neighbourhood in the west end of Toronto, the son of Irish immigrants. He attended Dovercourt Junior Public School and later Central Technical School. Nixon worked for 25 years at Continental Can Company, first as a stock keeper and then as a foreman. He was active in a wide variety of community service activities, including the Baptist Church, the United Appeal, the Cerebral Palsy Association and he was one of the founders of Camp Kwasind for underprivileged children. He and his wife Norma raised four children, one son and three daughters. He died September 19, 1998, of complications of a stroke suffered in May of that same year. Dante Matthew De Monte (May 6, 1926 – October 23, 2009) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Liberal member in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1967 to 1971 who represented the downtown Toronto riding of Dovercourt. Background Born in Toronto, to parents who had emigrated from the Friuli district in Italy, De Monte served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War and then earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Toronto and a law degree from the Osgoode Law School in 1955. He opened a law practice in North York and practiced law for over 40 years. An active supporter of a wide variety of social charities, he was particularly closely associated with the Friuli Centre, in Toronto. Married to the late Elvira De Monte, they had seven children. Tony Lupusella
Antonio (Tony) Lupusella (born June 12, 1944) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1975 to 1990. Originally a New Democrat, he later crossed the floor to the Liberal Party. Background Before entering politics, Lupusella worked with ''Centro'' an Italian organization that grew out of the Union of Injured Workers. Politics He was elected to the Ontario legislature in the 1975 provincial election, defeating Progressive Conservative incumbent George Nixon by 1,465 votes in the west-Toronto riding of Dovercourt. The NDP won several Italian ridings in Toronto during this election. He was re-elected over Nixon by a greater margin in the 1977 election. Dovercourt (provincial Electoral District)
Dovercourt is a small seaside town and former civil parish, now in the parish of Harwich, in the Tendring district, in the county of Essex, England. It is older than its smaller but better-known neighbour, the port of Harwich, and appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Today the towns are contiguous. In 1921 the parish had a population of 7695. Dovercourt is a seaside resort which offers shops and cafes for visitors and residents. The main shopping area is The High Street, with shops from independents to the national chains. Dovercourt Park or Dovercourt Village is a neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada situated north of Bloor Street between Christie Street to the east, the CPR railway lines to the north, and Dufferin Street to the west. History The Village of Dovercourt, located north of Dupont, was founded in the 1870s. Its residents were originally poor immigrants from England living in dozens of one and two bedroom tar and paper shacks which initially resulted in the village being called a shantytown. Central Technical School (CTS or Central Tech) is a Canadian composite high school in Toronto, Ontario. The school is run by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB); before 1998, it was run by the Toronto Board of Education (TBE). Central Tech is located in the Harbord Village neighborhood of downtown Toronto. The campus address is 725 Bathurst Street. The school has three buildings.
