Geology Of Norfolk
The geology of Norfolk in eastern England largely consists of late Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks of marine origin covered by an extensive spread of unconsolidated recent deposits. Jurassic The oldest rocks at or near the surface in Norfolk are late Jurassic mudstones and muddy limestones which underlie recent deposits in the area west of King's Lynn and Downham Market. Cretaceous Overlying the Jurassic is a Cretaceous sequence whose lowermost unit is the Wealden Group comprising mudstones, limestones, siltstones and sandstones and which extends in a band from Hunstanton southwards to south of the village of Southery. A narrow band of sandstone immediately east of this constitutes the Lower Greensand Group and beyond this, and stratigraphically above it, lie the mudstones and sandstones of the Gault and Upper Greensand formations. Gault
The Gault Formation is a geological formation of stiff blue clay deposited in a calm, fairly deep-water marine environment during the Lower Cretaceous Period (Upper and Middle Albian). It is well exposed in the coastal cliffs at Copt Point in Folkestone, Kent, England, where it overlays the Lower Greensand formation, and underlies the Upper Greensand Formation. These represent different facies, with the sandier parts probably being deposited close to the shore and the clay in quieter water further from the source of sediment; both are believed to be shallow-water deposits. The etymology of the name is uncertain and probably of local origin. Distribution It is found in exposure on the south side of the North Downs and the north side of the South Downs. Cawston, Norfolk
Cawston is a village and civil parish in the Broadland district of Norfolk, England. The village is approximately north of Norwich on the B1145 road, a route which runs between King's Lynn and Mundesley. Nearby towns are Reepham and Aylsham. History Cawston's name is of Anglo-Saxon origin and derives from the Old English for Kalfr's farmstead or settlement. In the Domesday Book, Cawston was recorded as being a settlement of 26 households in the hundred of South Erpingham. In 1086, the village was divided between the estates of King William and William de Warenne. Cawston was the scene of Norfolk's last duel, which occurred illegally in August of 1698 between Sir Henry Hobart of Blickling Hall and Oliver Le Neve of Great Witchingham. The duel was fought with swords and resulted in the fatal wounding of Hobart resulting in Le Neve fleeing to the Netherlands. Today, a memorial stone to the duel is maintained by the National Trust. Loddon is a small town and civil parish in Norfolk, England, about south-east of Norwich. The town lies on the River Chet, a tributary of the River Yare within The Broads. The name "Loddon" is thought to mean ''muddy river'' in Celtic in reference to the Chet. History Origins The earliest written mention of Loddon (Lodne) is in the will of Ælfric Modercope written in 1042 or 1043. In the will Ælfric split his land holdings in Loddon, Bergh Apton and Barton between the Bishops of Bury, Ely and St Benet of Holme. The Thames Group is an Eocene lithostratigraphic group (a sequence of rock strata) which is widespread in southeast England, especially in the Hampshire Basin from Dorset through Hampshire to West Sussex and in the Isle of Wight and in the London Basin from Berkshire east through northern Hampshire, Surrey and Greater London to Essex and north Kent. Clay is a type of fine-grained natural soil material containing clay minerals (hydrous aluminium phyllosilicates, e.g. kaolin, Al2 Si2 O5( OH)4).
