Gabrissa Hartman
Gabrissa Hartman is a Nauruan politician. She was a member of the Parliament of Nauru from 2017 to 2019, representing the Ubenide constituency. She is the third woman to be elected to the Parliament of Nauru. Hartman received her school education in Australia, attending junior boarding school at St Vincent's College in Sydney and completing her last year of high school at Presbyterian Ladies' College in Armidale. She then studied law at the University of South Pacific, attending their Emalus campus in Vanuatu. Hartman then practised law and was a former deputy clerk of parliament under Speaker Ludwig Scotty before entering politics. She is a mother of five and the granddaughter of former interim President of Nauru Derog Gioura. She unsuccessfully contested the 2016 election as an independent, running on a platform of "good governance, gender equality and improved housing". Nauru ( or ; na, Naoero), officially the Republic of Nauru ( na, Repubrikin Naoero) and formerly known as Pleasant Island, is an island country and microstate in Oceania, in the Central Pacific. 2016 Nauruan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Nauru on 9 July 2016. On 10 June 2016, the Parliament was dissolved by President Baron Waqa after it completed its three-year term. Speaker Ludwig Scotty called the elections for 9 July, with nominations taking place between 19 and 25 June 2016. Electoral system The 19 members of Parliament were elected from eight multi-member constituencies using the Dowdall system, a version of ranked voting; voters ranked candidates, with the votes counted as a fraction of 1 divided by the ranking number (e.g. a candidate ranked second will be scored as ½); the candidates with the highest total are elected. 2019 Nauruan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Nauru on 24 August 2019. President Baron Waqa lost his seat in Boe Constituency, making him ineligible for a third term. Following the elections, Lionel Aingimea was elected President, winning a parliamentary vote 12–6 against David Adeang. Electoral system The 19 members of Parliament were elected from eight multi-member constituencies using the Dowdall system, a version of ranked voting; voters rank candidates, with the votes counted as a fraction of one divided by the ranking number (e.g. a candidate ranked second will be scored as ½); the candidates with the highest total were elected. Nauru Regional Processing Centre
The Nauru Regional Processing Centre is an offshore Australian immigration detention facility in use from 2001 to 2008, from 2012 to 2019, and from September 2021. It is located on the South Pacific island nation of Nauru and run by the Government of Nauru. The use of immigration detention facilities is part of a policy of mandatory detention in Australia. The Nauru facility was opened in 2001 as part of the Howard Government's Pacific Solution. The centre was suspended in 2008 to fulfil an election promise by the Rudd Government, but was reopened in August 2012 by the Gillard government after a large increase in the number of maritime arrivals by asylum seekers and pressure from the Abbott opposition. Valdon Kape Dowiyogo (31 August 1968 – 8 December 2016) was a political figure and cabinet minister from the Pacific nation of the Republic of Nauru. Family and political background His father, Bernard Dowiyogo, served as President of Nauru on seven occasions between 1976 and 2003. His brother, Jesaulenko Dowiyogo, is also pursuing a political career. Valdon Dowiyogo stood for the Parliament of Nauru for the constituency of Ubenide and was duly elected. Speaker of the Parliament of Nauru On 27 December 2004 he was elected Speaker of the Parliament of Nauru. The occasion of his appointment was the death in office of the previous Speaker, Vassal Gadoengin. He served until December 2007. The Supreme Court of Nauru was the highest court in the judicial system of the Republic of Nauru till the establishment of the Nauruan Court of Appeal in 2018. Constitutional establishment It is established by part V of the Constitution, adopted upon Nauru's independence from Australia in 1968. Art. 48 of the Constitution establishes the Supreme Court as "a superior court of record", with jurisdiction prescribed constitutionally and by law. Derog Gioura
Derog Gioura (1 September 1932 – 25 September 2008) was a Nauruan political figure. He was President of the Republic of Nauru (acting) in 2003. Political role Gioura has been fighting many years with Kennan Adeang over a parliamentary seat in the Ubenide constituency, resulting in numerous vacations and by-elections between them two; the fight ended when they were both continually elected since 1980. Gioura was the Speaker of the Parliament of Nauru from 1987 until November 1992.
