Gérard Dionne
Gérard Dionne (19 June 1919 – 13 May 2020) was a Canadian Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church and the oldest Roman Catholic Bishop of Canada. Biography Dionne was born in Saint-Basile, New Brunswick and ordained a priest in Edmundston on 1 May 1948. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario as well as Titular bishop of Garba on 29 January 1975 and consecrated on 8 April 1975. On 26 November 1983 he was appointed bishop of the Edmundston Diocese (installed on 29 January 1984) where he remained until his resignation on 20 October 1993. In November 2009 a Canadian judge determined that Dionne thwarted a 1983 police investigation into child abuse allegations surrounding Father Bernard Cloutier. Edmundston () is a city in Madawaska County, New Brunswick, Canada. Established in 1850, it had a population of 16,437 as of 2021. On January 1, 2023, Edmundston amalgamated with the village of Rivière-Verte, New Brunswick, Rivière-Verte and parts of two Local service district (New Brunswick), local service districts; revised census figures have not been released. History During the early colonial period, the area was a camping and meeting place of the Maliseet people, Maliseet (Wolastoqiyik) Nation during seasonal migrations. From the mid to late eighteenth century, one of the largest Maliseet villages had been established at Madawaska and had become a refuge site for other Wabanaki peoples. The Maliseet village was originally located near the falls at the confluence of the Madawaska and Saint John Rivers. Roman Catholic Diocese Of Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario
The Diocese of Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario (, ) was decreed on September 16, 1904 and is formed by the southern portions of the districts of Thunder Bay, Algoma, Sudbury and Nipissing. The area has a long history within the Roman Catholic Church. The Recollets were the first missionaries in the Nipissing region around 1622. A number of Jesuits entered the area in 1641; Claude Pijart, being the leading missionary of that group. Their three missions were abandoned after a number of years, but Claude-Jean Allouez found converts still adhering to their faith in 1667. In 1668 the mission of Sault Sainte Marie was founded by the Jesuits and used as a base for expeditions to adjacent areas.
