Gunnar Eklund
Lieutenant General Carl ''Gunnar'' Eklund (21 March 1920 – 11 January 2010) was a senior Swedish Coastal Artillery officer. His senior commands include Chief of the Naval Staff, Chief of the Defence Staff, military commander of the Eastern Military District (Milo Ö) and Commandant General in Stockholm. Early life Eklund was born on 21 March 1920 in Stockholm, the son of lieutenant Carl Eklund and his wife Sally (née Karlsson). As a child in a non-commissioned officer family in the Coastal Artillery, he moved between different garrisons from an early age, but he passed ''studentexamen'' in Stockholm in 1938. Career Military career Eklund became second lieutenant in the Gotland Coastal Artillery Corps (KA 3) in 1941 and during his first years, he served in units with high preparedness in Stockholm's outer archipelago and he was promoted to lieutenant in 1943. The Defence Staff ( sv, Försvarsstaben, Fst) is the Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces' staff body and command resource for military strategic command, mission dialogue and reporting to the Government of Sweden, Swedish government, as well as being responsible for the war organization's Military capability, capability, availability and combat readiness. Major (Maj) ( sv, Major, Mj) is a field grade military officer rank in the Swedish Armed Forces, above the rank of captain and below the rank of lieutenant colonel. It is equivalent to the naval rank of lieutenant commander in the Swedish Navy. The Royal Swedish Naval Academy ( sv, Kungliga Sjökrigsskolan, KSS) was a school for officer training for the Swedish Navy, which operated in various forms between the years 1756 and 1987. History 1683–1791 In 1683, when the charter was issued that "those who were proposed to become officers in the navy, should undergo a naval officer exam", the navy only possessed the training schools, Mate's and Artillery Schools (''Styrmans- och artilleriskolorna'') in Karlskrona which was established by Admiral H. Vaxholm Coastal Artillery Regiment
The Vaxholm Coastal Artillery Regiment ( sv, Vaxholms kustartilleriregemente), designation KA 1, was a Swedish Navy coastal artillery regiment of the Swedish Armed Forces which operated between 1902 and 2000. The unit was based at Rindö in the Stockholm archipelago in Uppland. History On 1 January 1902, the Swedish Coastal Artillery was established as a separate military branch in the Swedish Armed Forces, following a decision taken in May the previous year. The decision meant that Karlskrona Artillery Corps and Vaxholm Artillery Corps was disbanded and that a coastal artillery was established. The Vaxholm Artillery Corps was transferred to the coastal artillery and formed the Vaxholm Coastal Artillery Regiment (KA 1).
