Gumasthavin Penn
''Gumasthavin Penn'' ( en, italic=yes, Clerk's Daughter) is a 1941 Indian Tamil-language romance film directed by B. N. Rao. It is an adaptation of the play ''Gumasthavin Magal'', itself based on Nirupama Devi's Bengali novel ''Annapurnaar Mandir''. The film was released on 10 May 1941 and became a success. Plot Seetha and Sarasa are sisters. Their father Ramaswami, a clerk working under the wealthy philanderer Mani, is unable to get them married. Ramu, another wealthy man in the same village, opposes marriage as it would interfere with his reformist ideals. Ramu's mother wants him to marry Seetha. He refuses, so a desperate Ramaswami gets Seetha married to a much older man. Seetha becomes a widow soon after. Mani tries to rape her one-day, but Ramu saves her. Traumatised and depressed, Seetha commits suicide. Feeling he is responsible for her demise, Ramu decides to arrange Sarasa's marriage. Nirupama Devi
Nirupama Devi ( bn, নিরুপমা দেবী) (7 May 1883 – 7 January 1951) was a fiction writer from Berhampore in Murshidabad district. Her literary pseudonym was ''Srimati Devi''. Early life and education Nirupama Devi's father was Nafar Chandra Bhatta who was a judicial employee. She was educated at home. Critical reception In 2013, Swapna Dutta writes for ''The Hindu'' that Nirupama Devi was an author who "wrote fearlessly about the social ills of the time: polygamy, forced marriages, dowry-related torture, and the heartbreak of widowhood or of being discarded by the husband for no fault of theirs," "wrote about society’s ruthless attitude to widows who dared to fall in love and, most of all, the utter helplessness of women in a male-dominated world," and "told the stories from a woman's perspective." ''Gumasthavin Magal'' () is a 1974 Indian Tamil-language film, directed by A. P. Nagarajan, starring Sivakumar and Aarathi. Kamal Haasan appears as a villain in the film and then finally changes into a good man. The film is an adaptation of the play of the same name, previously filmed in Tamil as ''Gumasthavin Penn'' in 1941. Plot Seetha and Sarasa are sisters. R. Krishnan (1909–1997) and S. Panju (1915–1984), collectively referred to as Krishnan–Panju, were Indian film directors. The duo directed more than 50 films in South Indian languages and in Hindi.
