Nirupama Devi
Nirupama Devi ( bn, নিরুপমা দেবী) (7 May 1883 – 7 January 1951) was a fiction writer from Berhampore in Murshidabad district. Her literary pseudonym was ''Srimati Devi''. Early life and education Nirupama Devi's father was Nafar Chandra Bhatta who was a judicial employee. She was educated at home. Critical reception In 2013, Swapna Dutta writes for ''The Hindu'' that Nirupama Devi was an author who "wrote fearlessly about the social ills of the time: polygamy, forced marriages, dowry-related torture, and the heartbreak of widowhood or of being discarded by the husband for no fault of theirs," "wrote about society’s ruthless attitude to widows who dared to fall in love and, most of all, the utter helplessness of women in a male-dominated world," and "told the stories from a woman's perspective." Brahmapur (; also known as Berhampur) is a city on the eastern coastline of Ganjam district of the Indian state of Odisha. Naresh Mitra
Naresh Mitra (18 May 1888 – 1968) was a Bengali actor, director and screenwriter. Career Naresh Mitra was born in 1888 in Agartala, Tripura, British India. He studied law from the University of Calcutta. He started his acting career in 1922 in Minerva Theatre. In 1923, Mitra joined Star Theatre in Kolkata and starred in several plays mostly in the role of anti hero. He worked and acted in number of films of Taj Mahal company, East India Film and Kali Films. Mitra directed ''Devdas'' in silent version produced by Eastern Film Syndicate in 1928. This is the first film adaptation of Devdas, the novel of Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay. He directed few films starring Uttam Kumar such as ''Bou Thakuranir Haat'', ''Annapurnar Mandir''. ''Annapurnar Mandir'' () was a Bengali social drama film directed by Naresh Mitra based on a same name novel of Nirupama Devi. This film was released on 6 August 1954 under the banner of ''Chitra Mandir'' and received 2nd National Film Awards in 1954. Here Uttam Kumar and Sabitri Chaterjee play the lead role as hero and heroine while Suchitra Sen played supporting role. This film had no music. This was the first film of Uttam Kumar to win a National Award. Plot Ramshankar is a poor man who lives with his two daughters. His elder daughter loves a young man but he arranges her marriage with an old man who is giving huge dowry. Soon she returns home as a widow. Owing to societal curse she commits suicide.
