Großhöflein ( hu, Nagy-Höflány, Nagyhöflány, hr, Velika Holovajna) is a market town in eastern Austria, in the state of Burgenland. It is located near the state capital Eisenstadt. History BCE, the area was part of the Celtic kingdom of Noricum. Under the Roman Empire, today's Großhöflein was in the province of Pannonia. Like all of Burgenland, Großhöflein was in Hungary until 1920/21. The Bezirk Eisenstadt-Umgebung ( hr, Kotar Željezno-okolica) is an administrative district (''Bezirk'') in the federal state of Burgenland, Austria. The area of the district is 455.5 km², with a population of 44,257 (2022), and a population density of 98 persons per km². The administrative center of the district is Eisenstadt ( hr, Željezno), itself a Statutory city (Austria), statutory city outside of the district. Noricum
Noricum () is the Latin name for the Celts, Celtic kingdom or federation of tribes that included most of modern Austria and part of Slovenia. In the first century AD, it became a Roman province, province of the Roman Empire. Its borders were the Danube to the north, Raetia and Vindelici to the west, Pannonia to the east and south-east, and Roman Italy, Italia (Triveneto, Venetia et Histria) to the south. The kingdom was founded around 400 BC, and had its capital at the royal residence at Virunum on the Magdalensberg. Pannonia
Pannonia (, ) was a province of the Roman Empire bounded on the north and east by the Danube, coterminous westward with Noricum and upper Italy, and southward with Dalmatia and upper Moesia. Pannonia was located in the territory that is now western Hungary, western Slovakia, eastern Austria, northern Croatia, north-western Serbia, northern Slovenia, and northern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Name Julius Pokorny believed the name ''Pannonia'' is derived from Illyrian, from the Proto-Indo-European root ''*pen-'', "swamp, water, wet" (cf. English ''fen'', "marsh"; Hindi ''pani'', "water"). It had a recorded population on 29 April 2021 of 15,074.
