Colorado State Highway 165
State Highway 165 (SH 165) is a state highway in southern Colorado. SH 165's western terminus is at SH 96 east of Silver Cliff, and the eastern terminus is at Interstate 25 (I-25), U.S. Route 85 (US 85) and US 87 near Colorado City. Route description SH 165 begins in the west at a junction with SH 96 roughly fifteen miles east of Silver Cliff. From there the road proceeds to the southeast through portions of San Isabel National Forest. One notable attraction on the route is Bishop Castle, about south of SH 96. After Fairview, the highway meets the southwest end of SH 78 near San Isabel, through which SH 165 also passes. After San Isabel, the highway turns more nearly easterly and passes out of the national forest and though Rye. The route continues east through Colorado City before reaching its eastern terminus at exit 74 of I-25. The highway forms part of the Frontier Pathways Scenic Byway. Custer County, Colorado
Custer County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 4,704. The county seat is Westcliffe. History Custer County was created by the Colorado legislature on March 9, 1877, out of the southern half of Fremont County. It was named in honor of Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer, who had died the previous year. Originally set in Ula, the county seat moved to Rosita in 1878, and to Silver Cliff in 1886 before settling in Westcliffe in 1928. The county was the site of a silver rush during the 1870s. Thousands of men poured into the county during this time in the hunt for silver. Some of the notable mines include the Geyser Mine (on the north edge of the town of Silver Cliff), the Bassick Mine (near the ghost town of Querida) and the Bull Domingo (north of Silver Cliff). A wind gap (or air gap) is a gap through which a waterway once flowed that is now dry as a result of stream capture. A water gap is a similar feature, but one in which a waterway still flows. Water gaps and wind gaps often provide routes which, due to their gently inclined profile, are suitable for trails, roads, and railroads through mountainous terrain. Examples of wind gaps in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia include Swift Run Gap, Rockfish Gap, and Buford's Gap. The last was the original crossing of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Bedford for the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad, later the Norfolk and Western Railway, a precursor of today's Norfolk Southern Railway system. San Isabel National Forest
San Isabel National Forest is located in central Colorado. The forest contains 19 of the state's 53 fourteeners, peaks over high, including Mount Elbert, the highest point in Colorado. It is one of eleven national forests in the state of Colorado and contains the Sawatch Range, the Collegiate Peaks, and Sangre de Cristo Range. It has a total area of 1,120,233 acres (1,750.36 sq mi, or 4,533.42 km²) spread out over parts of eleven counties in central Colorado.
