Green Valley, Los Angeles County, California
Green Valley (formerly, La Joya) is a census-designated place in the Sierra Pelona Mountains, in Los Angeles County, California. It lies at an elevation of 2936 feet (895 m). The population was 1,027 at the 2010 census. History Widow Smith's Station of the Butterfield Overland Mail was located about a mile south of Green Valley, on the San Francisquito Canyon Road, remained into the 1960s at 38839 San Francisquito Canyon Road. The building still stands, the building is believed to have been in use at the time the Butterfield stage line used this route from 1858 to 1861. The station was in existence by 1856, when Harris Newmark says he stayed there overnight when returning to Los Angeles from a meeting at Fort Tejon. This would have been Widow Smith's Station or Gordon's Station, 24 miles southeast from French John's Station (that was located just west of Neenach) and 10 miles north of King's Station located in the lower San Francisquito Canyon. A census-designated place (CDP) is a concentration of population defined by the United States Census Bureau for statistical purposes only. CDPs have been used in each decennial census since 1980 as the counterparts of incorporated places, such as self-governing cities, towns, and villages, for the purposes of gathering and correlating statistical data. King's Station
King's Station, also known as Moore's and Hollandsville, was a stagecoach station of the Butterfield Overland Mail 1st Division between 1858-1861 in southern California. The adobe building also served other travelers on the Stockton - Los Angeles Road, and other uses, until its 1928 destruction. Geography King's Station was located in the lower section of San Francisquito Canyon, in the Sierra Pelona Mountains. POSSLQ ( , plural POSSLQs) is an abbreviation (or acronym) for "Person of Opposite Sex Sharing Living Quarters", a term coined in the late 1970s by the United States Census Bureau as part of an effort to more accurately gauge the prevalence of cohabitation in American households. After the 1980 Census, the term gained currency in the wider culture for a time. After demographers observed the increasing frequency of cohabitation over the 1980s, the Census Bureau began directly asking respondents to their major surveys whether they were "unmarried partners", thus making obsolete the old method of counting cohabitors, which involved a series of assumptions about "Persons of Opposite Sex Sharing Living Quarters". The category "unmarried partner" first appeared in the 1990 Census, and was incorporated into the monthly Current Population Survey starting in 1995. Palmdale is a city in northern Los Angeles County in the U.S. state of California. The city lies in the Antelope Valley region of Southern California. The San Gabriel Mountains separate Palmdale from the Los Angeles Basin to the south. On August 24, 1962, Palmdale became the first city in the Antelope Valley. Bouquet Reservoir
Bouquet Reservoir is an artificial lake in the Angeles National Forest of Los Angeles County, California about west from Palmdale. At elevation of in the Sierra Pelona Mountains, the reservoir capacity is and is formed by Bouquet Canyon Dam on Bouquet Creek, which is a tributary of the Santa Clara River. The dam is constructed of earthfill and is 190 feet (58 m) tall, measured from the elevation of the original streambed. The dam was built by the city of Los Angeles and was completed in 1934. Official opening ceremonies were held at noon on March 28, 1934. The reservoir is part of the Los Angeles Aqueduct system, which is where it gets much of its water. San Francisquito Canyon
San Francisquito Canyon is a canyon created through erosion of the Sierra Pelona Mountains by the San Francisquito Creek, in Los Angeles County, Southern California. Geography The canyon cuts through the Sierra Pelona Mountains, which are central part of the Transverse Ranges system of California. At the San Francisquito Canyon head is the San Francisquito Pass, which the early routes between Los Angeles and the San Joaquin Valley crossed. The Sierra Pelona, also known as the Sierra Pelona Ridge or the Sierra Pelona Mountains, is a mountain ridge in the Transverse Ranges in Southern California. Located in northwest Los Angeles County, the ridge is bordered on the north by the San Andreas fault and lies within and is surrounded by the Angeles National Forest.
