Green Line (CapMetro)
The Green Line is a proposed commuter rail line for connecting the Northeast Austin area of Colony Park with the downtown Austin, Texas area in the United States. It is still in the planning stages as a part of CapMetro's Project Connect. In September 2008, CapMetro evaluated the need for rail service to alleviate pressure from congestion downtown to Colony Park, with a potential extension to Elgin, Texas, Elgin. To fix this problem, CapMetro initiated planning for a new rail line. The Green Line would operate the same as the Red Line, as it would run on an existing freight rail - the Austin Western Railroad - with adjustments made to them to allow for passenger rail service. In December 2008, a presentation, and then a follow-up, were given to the CAMPO Transit Work Group about the Green Line. CapMetro Rail
CapMetro Rail is a hybrid rail (light rail with some features similar to commuter rail) system that serves the Greater Austin area in Texas and is owned by CapMetro, Austin's primary public transportation provider. The Red Line is CapMetro's first and currently only rail line, and connects Downtown Austin with Austin, Texas, Austin's northwestern suburbs. The line operates on of existing freight rail transport, freight tracks, and serves 10 stations. After a series of delays, CapMetro Rail was inaugurated in March 2010. Downtown Station (CapMetro Rail)
Downtown station is a CapMetro Rail hybrid rail station in Austin, Texas. It is located in Downtown Austin at the corner of Fourth and Neches Street behind the Austin Convention Center. It is the current southern terminus of the Red Line. It was also the smallest, but busiest CapMetro Rail station, before it was rebuilt and expanded. On June 2, 2019, the Downtown station temporarily closed so that construction on an expanded station (three-track, two-platform) could commence; it was later reopened in early November of that year, but without Saturday service until the end of 2019. Project Connect
Project Connect (listed as Proposition A on the General Election ballot) is a transit expansion program by the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Capital Metro) in Austin, Texas, U.S. The program was approved by voters on November 3, 2020, in a local election concurrent with the 2020 presidential election. The project is estimated to cost $7.1 billion and will be funded with public funds, both federally and locally through increasing the local property tax rate by 8.75 cents. This is a smaller-scale version of the proposal, originally estimated at about $10 billion, but ultimately downsized to $7.1 billion due to cost concerns amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Elgin, Texas
Elgin ( ) is a city in Bastrop County in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 9,784 at the 2020 census. Elgin is also known as the Sausage Capital of Texas and the Brick Capital of the Southwest, due to the presence of three operating brickyards in the mid-20th century (two of which are still open). The Austin Western Railroad is a short-line railroad headquartered in Round Rock, Texas. AWRR is a subsidiary of Watco. AWRR operates a 103 mile (166 km) line from Fairland, Texas to an interchange with the Union Pacific at Elgin, Texas, Elgin. Tracks also continue from Elgin to an interchange with UPRR at Giddings, Texas, Giddings. There is an additional interchange with the UPRR at McNeil, Texas, McNeil.
