Austin Western Railroad
The Austin Western Railroad is a short-line railroad headquartered in Round Rock, Texas. AWRR is a subsidiary of Watco. AWRR operates a 103 mile (166 km) line from Fairland, Texas to an interchange with the Union Pacific at Elgin, Texas, Elgin. Tracks also continue from Elgin to an interchange with UPRR at Giddings, Texas, Giddings. There is an additional interchange with the UPRR at McNeil, Texas, McNeil. AWRR has rights to operate a 6.4 mile (10.3 km) branch from Fairland to Marble Falls, Texas, Marble Falls, and also 28 miles (45 km) from Fairland to Llano, Texas, Llano but these tracks have not seen revenue service in decades and the bridge is washed out at the Llano River, Little Llano River approximately six miles east of Llano. The Austin and Northwestern Railroad Historic District-Fairland to Llano is a historic district in Burnet County and Llano County, Texas, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. The listing included four contributing buildings, 43 contributing structures, and three contributing sites. It is located near Kingsland, Texas and runs roughly along railroad tracks from Fairland to Llano. It also was known as Southern Pacific Railroad—Fairland to Llano branch. The historic district is generally a linear strip along the railroad with a width of the right-of-way for the tracks. The three exceptions to this are the Fairland wye, the Antlers Hotel in Kingsland and the original depot in Llano, Texas. Burnet ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Burnet County, Texas, United States. The population was 6,436 at the 2020 census. Both the city and the county were named for David Gouverneur Burnet, the first (provisional) president of the Republic of Texas. Cedar Park, Texas
Cedar Park is a city and a major suburb of Austin in the state of Texas, approximately to the north-west of the center of Austin. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, the city's population was 77,595. History Before the arrival of European settlers in the 19th century, the Cedar Park area was inhabited by Native American tribes including the Tonkawa, the Lipan Apache, and the Comanche. The Houston and Texas Central Railway (H&TC), was an 872-mile (1403-km) railway system chartered in Texas in 1848, with construction beginning in 1856. The line eventually stretched from Houston northward to Dallas and Denison, Texas. with branches to Austin and Waco. The Austin and Northwestern Railroad began construction on a rail line west of Austin, Texas, United States, USA, toward Llano, Texas, Llano on April 20, 1881. The railroad was originally built as a Narrow gauge railway, narrow gauge line with plans to connect to the Texas and Pacific Railway at Abilene, Texas, Abilene. Construction reached Burnet, Texas, by 1882 and the line was later extended to Granite Mountain (Texas), Granite Mountain by 1885 - when the railroad was contracted to haul pink granite for the new Texas State Capitol building in Austin. The company later extended its line to Marble Falls by using the charter of the Granite Mountain and Marble Falls City Railroad.
