Burnet ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Burnet County, Texas, United States. The population was 6,436 at the 2020 census. Both the city and the county were named for David Gouverneur Burnet, the first (provisional) president of the Republic of Texas. He also served as vice president during the administration of Mirabeau B. Lamar. Geography Burnet is located one mile west of the divide between the Brazos and Colorado River watersheds near the center of Burnet County. It is northwest of the state capital, Austin—roughly a 1- to 1-hour drive via U.S. Highway 183 and State Highway 29. It is west of Georgetown and Interstate Highway 35 via State Highway 29, and north of San Antonio on U.S. Highway 281. Hamilton is a city in and the county seat of Hamilton County, Texas, United States, located in the state's central region. Its population was 3,095 at the 2010 census. Geography Hamilton is located in central Hamilton County at (31.703274, –98.120359). U.S. Route 281 passes through the center of the city, leading north to Hico and south to Evant. Fort Croghan
Fort Croghan was the third of the first four forts established by the United States government to protect settlers from hostile Indians along the Texas frontier. From its establishment on March 18, 1849, by Lt. C.H. Taylor (Company A, Second Dragoons) until it was abandoned in 1855, Fort Croghan was home to Company C, 8th Infantry, U.S.A. (mounted), and eventually became the headquarters of the Second Dragoon Regiment. Part of a chain of forts extending from Fort Worth to Fort Inge near present-day Uvalde, the fort was named for Colonel George Croghan. The fort originally covered some near the present-day city of Burnet, Texas, extending from Hamilton Creek up and over Post Mountain. Interstate 35 (I-35) in Texas is a major north–south Interstate Highway running from Laredo near the Mexican border to the Red River north of Gainesville where it crosses into Oklahoma. Along its route, it passes through the cities of San Antonio, Austin, and Waco before it splits into two auxiliary routes just north of Hillsboro. I-35E heads northeast where it passes through Dallas. I-35W turns northwest to run through Fort Worth. The two branches meet up in Denton to again form I-35, where it continues to the Oklahoma border. Georgetown is a city in Texas and the county seat of Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 67,176 at the 2020 census. It is 30 miles (48 km) north of Austin. Founded in 1875 from four existing colleges, the oldest of which had been founded 35 years earlier, Southwestern University is the oldest university in Texas. It is in Georgetown about one-half mile from the historic square. Georgetown has a notable range of Victorian commercial and residential architecture. Texas State Highway 29
State Highway 29 (SH 29) runs from south of Menard, Texas, east to SH 95 in Circleville (6.0 miles north of Taylor) via Mason, Llano, Burnet, Liberty Hill, and Georgetown in central Texas, United States. In Georgetown, SH 29 is known as University Avenue and is the main east–west artery through the city, passing in front of Southwestern University, which has been on the same road since its Georgetown campus opened in 1873. An open house meeting at East View High School in Georgetown was held on September 1, 2015. The meeting's purpose was to review the upcoming plans on widening SH 29 from 2 lanes (80 ft.) to 6 lanes (160 ft.). Construction will not start until after the Summer of 2016 and will occur from Southwestern Blvd extending all the way to Hwy 95 in Circleville, TX.
