Granite City Roller Girls
Granite City Roller Derby (GCRD) is a roller derby league based in Aberdeen, Scotland. Founded in 2008, the league currently have two teams which compete with teams from other leagues. League Structure The league consists of two travel teams: * Northern Fights (A, established 2008) * The Fight Hawks (B, established June 2015) League history Originating as the Aberdeen Aces, GCRD were the second roller derby league established in Scotland. The league struggled in the early days to find a training hall to practice in and resorted to skating in a local car park when weather allowed. In November 2008, the league began skating at the Aberdeen Lads Club, and was reborn as the "Granite City Roller Girls". In May 2010, the league hosted Scotland's first roller derby tournament, "Highland Fling". This was attended by Glasgow Roller Girls, Auld Reekie Roller Girls and Dundee Roller Girls. Halifax Bruising Banditas (HBB) are a flat track roller derby league based in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. Established in 2011, they are the first roller derby league in the Calderdale and Kirklees area. They play to the ruleset of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), and have been members of the United Kingdom Roller Derby Association (UKRDA) since 2013. League History The Halifax Bruising Banditas was founded in June 2011, led by Lauren Artington who had been skating with another league for two-and-a-half years. She brought together others who had begun to skate with Hot Wheel Roller Derby and Leeds Roller Dolls and aimed to spread the sport to the wider West Yorkshire area. Teams of amateur skaters from around the world were fielded to compete for their respective nations. The inaugural 2011 Roller Derby World Cup was hosted by Toronto Roller Derby, and was held December 1 through 4, 2011, at Supply Depot (Toronto), The Bunker at Downsview Park in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Team Scotland Roller Derby represents Scotland in women's international roller derby, in events such as the Roller Derby World Cup. The team was first formed to compete at the 2011 Roller Derby World Cup, and finished the tournament in eleventh place. Team Scotland played two warm-up matches for the World Cup, beating both a "rest of Scotland" team, and the "Northern All-Stars", consisting of skaters from the north of England. At the World Cup, Scotland lost narrowly to Aotearoa Roller Derby, New Zealand, 124 to 111, and overwhelmingly to USA Roller Derby, Team USA, 435 to 1. Although this led to the becoming the lowest-ranked team in the consolation stage, they beat Argentina All Stars, Team Argentina and later beat Roller Derby Brasil, Team Brazil, to finish eleventh out of thirteen teams.
